I think the powers that be are going to do their best to keep it under wraps, but I've little doubt that hundreds of innocents are going to die in the raid that is about to take place.

The "pacification" that the Marines are being sent in for is about one thing: bloody revenge.

42. That's about the best sumnation, isn't it??
When I saw those pics in the NY POst of all papers...it still freaked me, and made me realize that maybe we really shouldn't be there in any capacity., Also seeing Mel's movie, made me realize that I am probably an isolated idiot that does not think on violent terms. My Repug friends tell me the reason they feel "secure" is that they feel Bush and Co. are pretty much agressive on this terrorist thing, etc. Well...I just have reached the point where I don['t have anything to say except it's all fucked up and wished I could offer a good solution. I am at a total loss..............

9. I smell a rat
As my Air Force buds would say, "Button up yer assholes ... here it comes." One cannot count on a young person in a hostile zone to determine in the heat of the moment which orders are lawful and which are not. To avoid atrocity, one must assure that the leadership exerts their authority in a vigorous fashion to insist that the applicable laws are obeyed. It flows from the top.

We know, in this case, what the top is like. Therefore I think there is at least a 50-50 chance of a massacre happening in Iraq at some point in the near future.

We will slaughter them, and watch our liberty be slaughtered here at home, all justified in the cause of "freedom" and "democracy". Whose freedom? Whose democracy? Not the common American's.

15. A picture of the future.
It's very possible that the scenes like the ones now taking place in Iraq will be occurring all over America 20 years from now.(If not sooner). Before Bush, I would have never dreamed of such a horrible nightmare for the U.S. The right-wing coup in America has either already succeeded or is very close to total success. We may not be able to get Bush out of office even if he loses the election in November.

If Eagleburger goes on CNN and says that Falluja should be 'leveled' then things are not looking good.

18. What's tragic is a lot of Americans won't care
Had a woman I work with today tell me they should bomb Fallujah to the ground. I pointed out that would kill thousands of innocent people including children. Asked her if she was aware it was a town of 300,000 people. She said they shouldn't be supporting the attackers. In response to my concern about killing innocent children she responded with something like like 'well they're training the children to attack us like the Palestians'. WTF? Were do people come up with this stuff? What's sad is that I'm afraid lots of people feel this way.

It's hard because, I don't want American troops to be killed but I don't want innocent civilians killed either. Damn Bush Inc for putting us in this situation. Damn Damn Damn...

have not even the slightest sense of geography or understanding of geopolitical events.

Iraqis, Iranians, Palestians -- they're all a bunch A-Rabs as far as many are concerned.

Same goes with the Iraq war itself. My guess is atleast half of the population probably still believe that Saddam had something to do with 9/11. Hell, I saw a post on DU where some idiot poster started to spew that nonsense the other day. Then again, it may have been a freeper.

People don't understand that the war on Iraq is NOT part of the fight against international terrorism. They also seem to forgotten the initial reasons the administration gave to fight this war.

This war has no justification and no meaning. It is a crime and we are turning into what we claim to be fighting. There is a spot in hell waiting for all the members of this administration.

Was prosecuted over My Lai. He deserved it, but he was the scapegoat. At his court martial, Lt. Calley stated for the record that he was acting on orders.

30. Revenge is what makes Fallujah what it has become.
When the US killed those 15 Iraqis a while back they opened a can of worms. Now they want revenge . Fallujah is strong on paybacks.

BTW why arent there any Sunnis represented inm the new Iraqi governing council? That seems to be a totally stupid thing to do. They have taken everything from the Sunnis and did not even give them representation in this new government.

40. My Lai
When the soldiers in Charlie Company pushed into the hamlet, they expected to be locked into fierce combat with a Viet Cong battalion believed to be at My Lai. For three months the American unit had been in no major battles but had suffered a lot of casualties from snipers, mines, and booby traps. The soldiers were ready to prove themselves, ready to exact revenge on the enemy.

Charlie Company met no resistance; there were no Viet Cong soldiers at My Lai. Calley then ordered the slaughter of the civilians. People were rounded up into ditches and machine-gunned. They lay five feet deep in the ditches; any survivors trying to escape were immediately shot. When Calley spotted a baby crawling away from a ditch, he grabbed her, threw her back into the ditch, and opened fire. Some of the dead were mutilated by having "C Company" carved into their chests; some were disemboweled. One GI would later say, "You didn’t have to look for people to kill, they were just there. I cut their throats, cut off their hands, cut out their tongues, scalped them. I did it. A lot of people were doing it and I just followed. I just lost all sense of direction."
