A DOG, A GUN & A DAD: Patterson's advice on boys

Could someone please help me escape this state?!?!?!?

Paige Patterson, president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, speaks at a Sportsman's Safari event at First Baptist Church of Lavaca, Ark., where he told 1,300 people the greatest problem in America today is a war against boys and the establishment of laws to prevent men from hunting and owning guns. LAVACA, Ark. (BP)--The No. 1 problem in America today is a war against boys and the establishment of laws to prevent men from hunting and owning guns, Paige Patterson told a group of 1,300 men and boys at an Arkansas church.

But Patterson said he believes dads still can give boys what they need, and that when fathers provide for their sons the nation is strengthened.

Little boys, he said, need three things--a dog, a gun and a dad.

"Every little boy needs a dog," Patterson said, "and not a little yip dog, but a big dog that he can be proud of."

By learning to care for the dog and providing its food, grooming and veterinary needs, Patterson said, the boy will learn responsibility.

Similarly, the boy will learn responsibility and respect for the safety of others if he has a gun.

"Get him a gun," Patterson urged. "Not a play gun, but a real gun. Play guns are the most dangerous guns in the world."

1. It's just the Wal-Mart version of "Iron John"
Robert Bly said the same thing fifteen years ago. Just substitute "drum" for "gun" and "totem animal" for "big dog."

See, under the skin, intellectual men's-movement poets and good ol' boys aren't all that different.

oh i know i know. this is how these people are. at a boyscout meeting with fundie church/school my boys go to. was odd. one of the many things was the leader telling me when boys are 14-17 they need to interact with a girl to learn how to be comfortable with them. i am looking at this man, he is talking having a couple girls in a pack of teenage boys so the boys can learn how to interact with a girl. he says, sure would have helped me. hm is say

i am thinking a boy being raised with a mother and other girls around them, they could figure this out and more important for a older male to set example to teenage boy in being repectful to female.

it just all becomae a kinda sick god family and country meeting as they tell me about a movie they want the boys to watch with inapropriate touching. too much sexual in an odd kinda way. also found out the leaders mom was lesbian a decade ago, and now married and two kids, thinking of all her repression going on. walked out of there wanting to shower.

btw, another comment they were talking shooting bb gun and target practice, and i say hey i am a liberal and i dont like guns, will have to be dad doing that. without a beat the man said we will use you for target practice

glared at him, hallilujah and praise the lord

4. Well...
I think kids need both parents. I also think a child should have a pet. I'm partial to dogs, because I love them, not because I think they're some kind of man's right of passage. Fuck this guy.
