Are Republicans moving convention to Houston?
Heard a rumor over the weekend that Bushco is getting concerned. Supposedly their stonewalling of the 9/11 investigation will likely be so volatile that thousands of protestors will turn out and give the 9/11 families too many opportunities to get on the media. Has anybody else heard this rumor? Any links or info?

1. It'll never happen.
That would imply a mistake, something BushCo never admits. Nope. It'll be in NYC, alright. I just hope that the protests don't turn violent--in other words, I hope the so-called "Black Bloc" stays home.

2. I have heard it, but nothing
confirmed (I live in NYC). There is an organization here called Counter Convention and their website is www.counterconvention.org

I haven't been on it in a few days, but they may have some information.

3. They were talking about the RNCC on Randi just now.
It's still in NYC, but apparently the NYC Firefighters will not attend and are not going to pose with Bush.

4. Doubtful.
Much of the expense of the NY convention has already been paid. They won't back out now. It's too expensive to change the venue, and would look like weakness.

6. They're counting on those protests
Specifically, they're counting on GOP brownshirts turning those protests violent, with all sorts of smashing and looting and pictures of scruffy looking kids being arrested by NY's finest.

The 1968 protests turned the tide for Nixon. Middle America saw the cops hammering a bunch of scruffy looking kids and felt smugly vindicated in their complacency about supporting the war. The evening news neglected to tell them that the riots had been started by thugs and cops, just like they'll neglect to tell them that any trouble in NYC will be started by GOP brownshirts and cops.

They won't move their campaign to Houston. They are hoping for riots to scare the sheep into voting them into office.

be the one's instigating any rioting going on. The gop will have operatives in many of the groups there.

16. Well, you know what will block that from happening, right?
Middle-aged farts wearing glasses and hats standing around running "interference". Myself included. What you describe will be a very difficult spin for the media.

10. Way too late to move it to Houston
Heck, read an article today about how it is too late to move the DNC convention just across town in Boston. No way the cons can manage to move theirs across country.

11. I'll bet they'll switch venues
but it will still be in NYC.

Instead of going to Ground Zero for a glorious victory party, maybe W will personally reopen the Statue of Liberty instead? :puke:

15. Not Houston Again
The last time the GOP convention was in Houston, everything was messed up. Keep the convention in NYC.

I saw a mention that the NYC police are expecting to arrest a 1,000+ people a day during the GOP convention. This could be worse than Chicago in 1968 for the GOP.

21. Don't think that would be a good Idea.
I think it would make the Democrats look like a bunch of hypocrites. We got angry at Bush for using 9/11 to get elected, but when he moves the Republican Convention we move ours to NYC. It would look bad for the dems and give the repubs something to scream about. Furthermore, I do not think it would go over well with the public especially the 9/11 and military families. Right now we have the advantage in that we are not using 9/11. I think we should try to keep that advantage.

22. Not sure it would have that effect at all
Would anyone really believe that the Dems were trying to out Republican the Republicans by using 911 for political advantage? The Republicans would be giving up NYC because of pressure from 911 victim families and potential protests, but would having the convention there necessarily be bad news for Dems also? In such a situation, Repiublicans would be running away from trouble, while Democrats would be facing issues head on, addressing problems which were caused by Bush but can be solved by the Democrats.

This is all just fun discussion, however, since I wouldn't give such a situation a one in 1000 chance of ever occuring.

23. The cost of NYC
May be much higher than they think. I think it will be the political destruction of the Republican Party. The Libertarians will assume the role of the second party.

24. If the truth about 9/11 continues to rise to the surface ...
the Repugs will regret their decision to have the convention in NYC. After all, it's "Ground Zero" - and it's amazing how a city the size of New York manages to ban together and become as close as a small town community in times of trouble. You don't mess with angry "New Yawkers" ... they'll be lining up to kick those Repug butts out of town!
It could be fun to watch.

26. Monopoly Guy sez: BRING IT ON!!
Use the city of New York as a political fetch-and-geddit toy, and earn the wrath of most Americans.

Couldn't possibly be true... and if by chance they really are that clueless, then we, my friends, have just inherited a windfall.

If they bail out and go to Houston, we can paint them as cowards. It is a win-win situation for us.
