FOX: starting attack on Sen.Dodd for comments on Sen. Byrd

I saw this last night on "Special Report (on every night) with Twit Hume. Expect the RW radio to make as much hay of this as they can.

Seems that 6 days ago Sen. Dodd was one of the many Senators who praised and thanked Sen. Byrd last Thursday after he cast his 17,000th vote in Congress. Dodd said that Byrd was a "man for all seasons" and said that he would have fit right in with the founding fathers AND during the Civil War (Byrd is a big Civil War buff).

Someone must have stumbled on this over the weekend and they compared it to Lott's praising of Strom Thurman. Fox made sure that everyone knew that Byrd HAD been in the Klan (didn't mention that he later totally renounced them and his misguided membership) and played his "white n_____" comment from a couple of years ago.

Major Garrett ended the "report" with something along the lines of :"This might just confirm what many have hinted at for some time....a double standard.....Britt"

Did Sen. Dodd really mean that Senator Byrd of West Virginia is a man for all seasons?

1. Are you kidding?

Byrd, like Strom, apologized for their past bigotries. And everyone is entitled to change. The difference is what Dodd said and what Lott said. Lott could have praised Strom for his service to this country and nothing would have been made of his statements. But Lott wished Strom had been elected as a Dixiecrat and said that this country would have better off by eliminating all the problems we now have in this country. Now if Dodd had thanked Byrd for belonging to the KKK and said things would be better if the KKK were in power that would be like Lott. Instead he just praised Byrd for his service. Two entirely different comments. But what do faux news know?

2. Senator Dodd isn't leader of the senate like lott was, now is he?

well, the founding fathers did allow slavery and he would have fit in on the southern side in the war. So what?

5. Byrd's Long Road

Typical tripe for the new Comedy Central...

Robert Byrd, like Strom & Trent, came from a segregated South that was dominated by the old Democrat party...not the one we know of today. In the 50's & 60's, Southern Democrats were forced to either accept social change or become Repugnians...like Strom & Trent and many others did. Byrd stayed and changed with the times.

Yes, he voted against the Civil Right Bill of '65 (and yes, more Repugnicans supported the bill than Democrats and without their votes it probably wouldn't have passed), but he changed with the times and he's become a champion for civil liberties and it's strict constitutional interpretations.

We see the flicker of a flame that once roared. He was the gatekeeper during the Nixon, Ford & Raygun years as Majority Leader. Damn I miss having Democrats controlling the House and Senate!! He still speaks with thunder, but not with the force and effect he once had.

I still fault Byrd for being one of the biggest supporters of the Vietnam War and staying pro-war well into the Nixon years...but I await what he has to say today, and know he won't mince words towards this regime.
