Who said "No one could imagine them using planes as missiles"
I know Rice side it, and as I recall, she said it while trying to explain away the disclosure of the memo Bush received before 9-11 warning of hijackings. But didn't Bush say it first? I have a clear memory of Bush saying that one Sunday soon after 9-11, in the same speech where he called for a Crusade, and caught flak for it. I remember thinking when Rice said it that she was just repeating his lie.

Anyone remember that speech? Any transcripts of it? I've Googled, but am having no luck.

Edit: sorry, I thought you were looking for the Rice quotes. I think I heard someone else say it too. It was probably chimpy.

She's done it again, recently!

Remarks by the President Upon Arrival
The South Lawn

snip...

We need to go back to work tomorrow and we will. But we need to be alert to the fact that these evil-doers still exist. We haven't seen this kind of barbarism in a long period of time. No one could have conceivably imagined suicide bombers burrowing into our society and then emerging all in the same day to fly their aircraft - fly U.S. aircraft into buildings full of innocent people - and show no remorse. This is a new kind of -- a new kind of evil. And we understand. And the American people are beginning to understand. This crusade, this war on terrorism is going to take a while. And the American people must be patient. I'm going to be patient.

4. One wonders
exactly how dead people are supposed to show remorse?

6. Forward that to Air America and let Franken remind everyone.
It kind of burns Bush if we held him to it.

5. Gordon Liddy was writing about that
as early as the mid-eighties. There was even a movie on the theme (terrorists attempt to crash jet into sky scrapers). If these guys think no one thought about that one, it just shows how incompetent, ignorant, and ill prepared they all are.

7. Yes, it was ludicrous. As a baseball team owner, Bush had to
have considered it in the past. Remember Black Sunday? I remember living in Dallas and talking about it with my wife when we drove past Texas Stadium or the old Arlington Stadium (where the Rangers played before Bush stole the Curtis Mathis land and built the Ballpark). So I know Bush knew it was possible.

It was also part of a Tom Clancy novel, where terrorists crashed a hijacked plane into the Capitol Building during a SOTU speech, making Jack Ryan president.
