who else suspects things are far worse in Iraq than we're being told?
I just have this nagging hunch that things are far worse than we've been told in Iraq.

I wouldn't be surprised if those Sky news reports about 130 soldiers being killed were true.

I have a feeling that there are terrible things happening over there right now that they're keeping us from knowing about.

I'm not optimistic about our guys and girls over there, I'm worried that they're gonna get their asses seriously kicked in the next few days. I don't think they were prepared for this at all.

Anybody else share this?

1. Sky News is notoriously unreliable. However, there ARE a few things
we aren't being told.

Sky News journalist resigns over "fake" Iraq report
2003-07-18 17:22:06 GMT (Reuters)
LONDON, July 18 (Reuters) - A Sky News journalist accused of "faking" a television report from a British Royal Navy submarine during the Iraq war has resigned, Sky News said on Friday.

The report purported to show the preparation and firing of a cruise missile from HMS Splendid. But a BBC documentary crew filming at the same time said it had been specially staged for the benefit of Sky's camera and no missile was fired.

2. I think you are probably right
the press is being kept at a good distance. What is scary is that we may never know. And dead Iraqis? they don't count them!

5. When the ...........
office of information in Iraq is staffed by Rebublican operatives who have been quoted as saying that their mission is to "accentuate the positive", the odds that we're being told facts based on the reality of the situation are next to nil.

6. It Is, Mr. Waggr
A "cheap and cheerful" version of events being put out. It is not so much a question of some great defeat looming in the next few days, but rather of a sea-change taking place before our eyes, in which the quiesence of the Shia majority is dissolving into a resolve for resistance not just to occupation, but the puppet regime due for foisting upon them. Until now, it really has been only a small number of persons, mostly in a limited geographical area, who have been in bitter opposition to the U.S. presence. This is no longer true.

"LET'S GO GET THOSE BUSH BASTARDS!"

15. Hi Magistrate...I have a question for you.
How long does Chalabi survive once the handover is completed 6/30?

I think we should start a pool. If he's not assassinated or strung up, I think he'll be out of the country before the end of the summer.

7. Yes
I noticed it Wednesday morning. I spent the previous two evenings reading almost constantly updated wire reports, and this morning, while the fighting that had been reported was characterized as increasingly intense, there was basically nothing in the way of concrete information.

There doesn't seem to be much in the way of official news since Tuesday. The only concrete thing I've seen anywhere was an adament statement that the "five dead" reported by one news service were actually "five wounded." Yet, at the same time, I occasionally visited various sites that document Iraqi casualties, notably lunaville.org, and the number of coalition dead continued to rise ... but no stories.

As of right now, almost 2am central time, lunaville shows a total of 640 coalition dead. The highest major media number I've seen is 637, which is the CNN site. And, that site said 636 earlier in the day.

But no story.

Where is the president, for example? Shouldn't he be trying to calm us, spin this, tell us that our casualties are low, going into Easter weekend for many?

Or... will the other shoe drop over Easter weekend? Is that when the real casualty numbers will emerge?

That 180 number has been nagging me too, but not near as much as the essential media blackout of all that is happening, in real-time, in Iraq. They won't be able to hold off the reporters for much longer - and although we're all cynical about the media, they have shown some teeth lately.

Unofficial news sources are brimming with ominous, vague statements like "high casualties." I want to know, and I want to know quickly. How many dead? How many wounded? How many civilians?

ON EDIT: I did mean to add my most nagging of concerns... leaks and innuendo that the Pentagon is entertaining the idea of more troops, and less rotation. They're doing so rather publicaly, in the middle of an election season, on the eve of Condi Rice's testimony. The White House seems to have lost complete control of the situation, and the Pentagon seems to be bracing us with their historic turn-around...

from us. Fisk is reporting, AlJeezirah (sp?) is on the inside and we have one "imbed" riding with some troops. Hell no, we are not getting anywhere near the truth of what is happening in this country, but we have not been for months, what is new? It is just exceptionally frustrating when you know so much is happening and that you have no access to the real news.

I feel like SCREAMING RIGHT NOW!! This can't be happening at this moment in time. Why though, should I have ever thought that it would not?

I feel so sorry for all our people trapped in Iraq and for all the people/citizens of Iraq. You have never deserved any of this. God help us comfortable Americans, that we were not strong enough, nor did we care enough, to stop this illegal "war and occupation".

Sorry for the rant.

ULTIMATELY, WE ARE TO BLAME! ATROSCITIES ARE BEING COMMITTED IN THE NAME OF THE US, FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY, (that means you and me).

I am ashamed.

12. News reports are trickling out of Fallujah now... 280+ dead Iraqis
400 wounded. No word, of course, on coalition or civilian casualties. And that's just one city.

But at least the Associated Press found a way around the Fallujah media blackout.

16. I do, I believe things are much worse
than we are being led to believe. How are they going to explain it when the area turns to complete chaos and civil war breaks out, I don't see how they can hide that. :-(

18. I think if you read the reports in LBN carefully you get the picture
but you have to pay attention to ALL the reports, especially from overseas. When you read the Sunnis and the Shias are coming together against us,and when you read that even GOPers like O'Reilly and Scarborough are starting to question the war, its pretty clear that things are bad over there.

I saw one poster describe this as the biggest failure of foreign policy in US history. It couldnt be any worse for our troops, to be involved in a situation like that.
