21. A few details
He interviewed four 9/11 widows who showed their displeasure with the Rice testimony, particularly her incessant assertions about not knowing things and about this or that not being her job. Their response, in one form or another, was to ask "It *was* her job, and she didn't do it."

Matthews then follows up with open-ended questions that let them expound.

He's repeated the the Ben-Veniste questioning of Rice on the August 6 PDB three times so far. He noted that it was the "key" moment of the day because he forced her into revealing the title, which in turn showed that the briefing focused on the fact bin Laden was planning to attack the US within the United States soon.

Next, he interviews two congressmen, one Dem and one Rep. He lets the Democrat talk after asking him if the Aug. 6 PDB, mentioned above, should be declassified, this being a question NO journalist has asked before. He turns to the Republican, and when the Repug starts moving off into criticism of Clarke, Matthew cuts him off and says, "I don't care about Clarke..." that's not our topic of discussion right now, OWWTE.

And on and on...

I'm rather shocked...

31. Widows: We don't want an apology now...(more details)
what we want is for Rice, *, etc. to examine all of the structures and processes to find the problems and fix them now, so that all citizens are safe and our children are safe.

I'm paraphrasing here--One of the Widows: OK, let's GIVE them 9-11. They couldn't have known; couldn't have been expected to put the pieces together. But several months later they were putting forth faulty intelligence in the buildup to Iraq. No one had done anything to fix the problems. Why was that allowed to happen? What is the excuse for that?

"why did we have to beg for this commission?"

"I voted for Bush. I thought he would be my biggest ally. But he has been my biggest adversary in getting this commission appointed."

45. Let's give them9-11??? They probably caused your loved ones death and
you want to hand that to them? Then she goes on to say how the First Goofball is obstructing an investigation into 9-11 but they should hand them a victory on it??? America desperately needs more logic courses.

60. She was NOT saying that she believes they should be let off
the hook for 9-11--if she were, why in the world would she be working so hard with the other widows to get accountability?

She is trying to simplify one of their arguments to make a point very clear. She's saying to the Bush apologists, "let's stop talking about 9-11 for a moment. Pretend that I agree with you on that and put it aside. Even if you are totally right about 9-11, that it could not have been foreseen, don't you see that you can't let them off the hook for what happened afterwards? They didn't review any of the intelligence structure and process to find the holes. Instead, they relied on it (or worse) and made the same mistakes or worse with Iraq, then they fought those of us who are still to this day pushing to identify the problems and get them solved."

Hope that makes it clearer.

42. That's great and all...but let's not kid ourselves. Matthews is a whore
and could turn on a dime.

One year ago he was cheerleading the tanks on to Bagdad after a brief, prewar flirtation with actual journalistic integrity when he asked a few pertinent questions.

Don't be fooled by one day of hysteria...Rove will call to adjust Tweety's attitude and things will return to normal on SoftBalls.

Matthews is saying why didn't the President know on morning of 9/11 that we were NOT under attack! Matthews said

Daily Kos had this:

Hardball exclusive
by Tom Schaller
Thu Apr 8th, 2004 at 13:14:09 EDT

If you are near a television, go to MSNBC's Hardball RIGHT NOW. Four 9/11 widows are criticizing the Administration's handling of 9/11 and the stonewalling of the Commission like simply nobody else has...and certainly nobody else is entitled to. The single most powerful television I've seen to date. Update <2004-4-8 13:43:33 by Tom Schaller>:: The four women are: Kristen Breitweiser, Mindy Kleinberg, Patty and Laurie (sorry, didn't put their names on chiron again so I didn't get the last two, but I will try to find out). Breitweiser sounds like a typically confident NYC/LI native; she was giving Matthews a lesson. Update <2004-4-8 13:43:33 by Tom Schaller>:: Also, Breitweiser said she voted for Bush, and considered him her "biggest ally" but now believes he is her "biggest adversary." She calmly said she would "give" the Administration the fact that they could not prevent 9/11, but was miffed because of the subsequent stonewalling, and that they should not be taking credit for their candor now because it was only after efforts by people like her to force out any of this testimony. All four widows were asked if the president's and vice president's insistence on a non-public, not-under-oath testimony was motivated by a need to protect national security or because it was political. All four unhestitatingly said: "political."

http://www.dailykos.com/

One thing I'm getting tired of reading is the crap that the 9-11 widows got wide news media coverage. It wasn't until the shit hit the fan with the Clarke book that the news media payed much attention. The only journalist beside Gail Sheehy who paid them any attention was Phil Donahue when he had Kristen Breitweiser on last year before he was cancelled.

I'm glad now that these women are finally getting the attention they so richly deserve. I understand they provided much of the research to the 9-11 commission. That alone shows how much this cabal has been trying to hide the truth and how reluctant those in our government were cowed by them not to dig for it.

I hope when Kerry wins these women get a medal from a new Democratic administration.

(I was really amazed to see Matthews feature the 9/11 widows sympathetically, and give their questions a fair hearing.
BTW, Matthews himself asked "Why is this the first time I've heard the title of that PDB given to Bush on August 6, 2001?")

That Mathews and some of the other media is attacking Shrub only shows how close to the fall Shrub is, not that media has suddenly remembered what they are there for.

The media, and TV especially, lives and dies by the ratings numbers. Post 9-11, the mood of the country being what it was, one was not likely to get eyeballs with this sort of stuff. The mood was one of pulling together, rallying around the flag and the president.

Things are different now. The charges against the administration are sensational. And people, having heard enough other information so as to be able to question the Bush* administration, will have less and less trouble getting mad at Bush* rather than the talking head when these sorts of charges are leveled.

Their quest for eyeballs, coupled with the herd mentality of the TV news media, might well result in a coming avalanche of stuff questioning Bush*. It really could happen. If it doesn't now, I'm pretty sure it will in the coming months.

55. Agree with this. Well, specifically I think:
People like Matthews--like many of our politicians--may simply be as susceptible to the shifting winds of opinion as anyone else. Meaning: they feel and think the way the crowd feels and thinks. It's cynical, (ratings), but it's also genuine: they changed their minds, I do think it's possible. Ideally, you'd hope that people in that sort of position would be able to cut through the bullshit and tell the truth early on--and kudos to the few (Byrd, Dean) who did--but...so it goes. People are upset. It's getting just impossible to spin this anymore.

58. I'm encouraged that even O' Reilly is questioning
at least as far as Iraq. I'm hoping that the likes of Hannity and Limbaugh if they refuse to change their positions on Bush are going to end up looking like fools and discredited and only speaking to the ditto-heads and kool-aid drinkers.

62. I agree. Fanning the flames to get viewers is what
Tweety's about.

I suspect he has some sympathy for the widows though. But I do not believe for a moment that he's changed his feathers.

61. Matthews also said that the W-H is withholding 9/11 documents ...
I think he said that the W-H was withholding 69 9/11-related documents from the 9/11 Commission. Subpoena the documents before they hit the shredder!

67. 9/11 and options
I don't have a link, but it's out there somewhere. Franken touched on it during today's show. His staff found a link. Al kinda pooh-poohed the whole thing as a wild conspiracy theory since options require both buyers and sellers.

All I remember from the web page I found was that American (AMR) and United (don't know ticker) shares had options placed in the 285 times normal volume range. Delta was near normal. Data was supposedly recovered from hard drives found in WTC wreckage.

72. Shaggy Don Imus was croaking about Matthews this morning
I tuned in in the middle of this mornings' broadcast on CNBC (?). Imus was all pissy about something Tweety Matthews said last night .

73. Use this segment in a Moveon commercial:
Edited on Fri Apr-09-04 08:39 AM by DaveSZ
"I voted for Bush. I thought he would be my biggest ally. But he has been my biggest adversary in getting this commission appointed."

(If she'd agree of course)

74. If wishes were horses
Spare me. Matthews' first newspaper column after 9/11 was around the terrific "opportunity" Bush now had that Clinton didn't. Yeah, something to really sink his teeth into and exploit. One big, fun political game with 3,000 dead.

Don't kid yourself about him or Blitzer or 90% of the dumbed down press corps. It's show biz, baby.
