Homophobia rampant at DU?
I don't know...I just sort of FEEEEEEL it sometimes, and I am very concerned about it.

I need to feel SAFE here and it makes me sad and weepy sometimes that I don't FEEL THE LOVE toward us homos/fags/queers/cocksuckers from each and every one of you at all times.

Oh, and sometimes some of you type words on your keyboards that make me THINK or experience sensations which are known as FEEEELINGS and I'm not really comfortable with that, and if you all are GOOD and DECENT and REAL PROGRESSIVES, you people will respect my FEEEEEEEELINGS and only write things that I approve.

Please forward your potential posts to my INBOX for pre-approval.

Thank you, thank you.

Please like me; please hold me.

Sounds like a bad tab of acid, man.

I usually recommend drinking orange juice, subdued lighting, and quiet music.

You'll be OK in 12 hours or so.

11. sarcasm?
It's a deliberate effort to mock people. It's a deliberate attempt to make people feel like shit.

Misunderstandings are one thing. Light sarcasm and teasing are perfectly fine. Smart and considerate people, though, understand when and where such things are OK.

After everything that's gone on in the past few days, though, this is just mean.

Did I hit alert? Did I ask a mod to delete the post? Do you know anything at all about me or my positions on anything?

I think the post is in poor taste. People on every side of everything are feeling rather raw right now, and making fun of them strikes me as mean and inconsiderate.

Do you believe the above comment has absolutely no merit at all? Can you not even consider the possibility that the original post would elicit an understandably negative response from someone? Is it really that outlandish to think those who complain of ridicule might respond badly to further ridicule?

30. depends, don't it?
I can't answer that question in the general case.

Am I not supposed to call Trent Lott a racist because it might make him feel like shit?

Sometimes accusations are warranted, sometimes they're not. Sometimes people feel like shit because the accusation is untrue, and sometimes they feel like shit because they don't want to admit it might be right.

As I've said repeatedly, though, no one on either side of any issue on here seems to be paying attention to those who see things another way. Everyone just reacts and gets defensive. No one bothers to fucking LISTEN.

44. my problem
Is the absolute refusal to consider that they might be true.

And if it is true, it doesn't really matter that it feels like shit, because the only way to feel better is to deal with it and eradicate it. Should we pretend it's not there to make sure no one's feelings are hurt? Seems to me EVERYONE'S being too sensitive and no one wants to tackle the issue straight on.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I do not believe anyone here is intentionally racist or sexist. I think we all suffer from the same problem people in general have, and that is not recognizing how and when we assume and perpetuate sexist/racist stereotypes.

It's not nice to realize your own faults - believe me, I know. It's not fun and easy to deal with self-reflection, but that doesn't mean it should be avoided.

58. this might be *relevant*
It feels like shit whether it's true or not.

... relevant, if it were "true" that women are bitches, or gay men are fags, or black people (who do exist outside of "America") are niggers, etc. etc.

Or, of course, if it were true that there are no misogyinsts, homophobes or racists in the world.

As it is, I fail to see the relevance.

And I don't give a shit whether a misogynist, homophobe or racist feels like shit.

And I just can't imagine why you would, or think I should.

There just are people in the world who enjoy making mockeries of themselves, I guess.

Edited on Thu Apr-08-04 05:31 PM by nothingshocksmeanymo
Mockery of those who may perceive racism or sexism to be present. Rather than address the concerns, numerous threads are started by a disruptive few in order to mock people so as to discourage them from posting.

It's basically ganging up on others rather than addressing their points.

There was a lot of yelling and blaming and finger pointing, but discussion? Nope.

Hell, with regards to the bitch threads, people are still talking about bannning words - which Skinner never proposed - and freedom of speech - as if the board doesn't already limit speech.

No, a misunderstood, symoblic issue was tossed out for a flamefest and in the ensuing mess the real issues were rarely discussed. That would be why the keep coming up, and will continue to come up.

There was ONE thread started on racism by one poster and some responses on it and one started by GJ to continue that same discussion...since those two threads and Skinner's 9 threads, there have literally been DOZENS of threads REACTING to those threads...really BGL..literally DOZENS...did THEY all not get the same opportunity to comment as well?

again literally DOZENS of threads reacting..I think you are lecturing the wrong person.

I have a remedy...if the shoe fits ..wear it..if it doesn't then don't.

One great way to distinguish racism, sexism, and every other ISM is through discussion and self evaluation. One can't have either without a dialogue.

Ido find it curious that you are SO MUCH MORE TOLERANT of an irrational backlash than the precipitating accusations..remember that Shakespeare quote about protesting too much?

124. i find this fascinating...and it's going on in two threads
this very same discussion. let me see if i have it *straight*:

it's irresponsible (reprehensible, etc) to call someone a racist or a sexist or a homophobe...EVEN IF THEY use racist, homophobic and sexist language, because
:nopity: it might damage their beliefs about how liberal they are :nopity:

this seems to be the gist of THAT argument.

to recap...it's ok to use sexist, racist, homophobic language and to express anti-woman, racist or anti-gay sentiments, because THAT'S free speech of the kind we must all defend...

BUT....

:scared: it's irresponsible, dangerous, reprehensible, jumping the gun,. hysterical, and so on to use the words "sexist" "racist" "homophobe" as "labels" and "name-calling" (this is an irresponsible use of free speech, i've been told). :nuke:

Like you said, if the shoe FITS, wear it.
If the woman is acting like a bitch (NOT a sexist term), and is called a bitch, she deserves it (although I'm just against name-calling, in general). Same thing for racists.

And, as a woman, I'm sure if someone called you a bitch (probably deservingly OR undeservingly) you'd give them a little backlash of your own.

Hole filled.

And if someone calls me a bitch..they should be sitting behind a computer where a total fucking chicken shit would do such a thing, or be prepared to face the wrath...if you have the guts to say it..you should equally have the guts to live with the consequences.

But please acknowledge..you DO INDEED have a double standard where WHINING is concerned...white men who whine about being called racists or sexists have a valid whine...women and AA"s who WHINE aout them being so don't.

114. Look..if someone were to address me in a sexist, racist or homophobic
manner, I have every right to take them to task on it. That's the beauty of this free speech experiment. YOur right to free speech allows you to say what you want within certain guidelines i.e. fighting words etc. My right to free speech gives me every right to counter right back.

Again, the double standard is that you find ONE behavior hurtful but don't seem to have any empathy for the precipitating event.

The folks who have been posting these copycat (mockery) threads have only undermined their own position and have proven that the concerns expressed had (have) genuine merit. I've heard the same kind of so-called satire used by the likes of Rush and his cronies to attack women, gays, the poor, people of color, etc. It's disappointing to see those old predictable tactics used here on DU to attack the same people mocked by the RW.

34. And now for something completely different...
.... I've happily defended my right to use the word "bitch" in any context I choose.

I don't really see much overt racism here, but then maybe I'm not that attuned to it being a non-minority.

But holy crap you don't have to make fun of someone with a sincere concern, even if you find that concern unfounded.

Nobody has come at me with their claws extended just because I don't agree with them - I'm sure you think your post is funny and perhaps it is to some, but personally I think there are a lot more things around here that can be easily poked fun of...

to be intentionally mocking and nasty. Its the new form of political correctness. Don't discuss ideas. Don't reject the characterization. (in whiney 80s Olivia Newton John form: ) Let's get marginal... marginal... I wanta get marginal... let me hear your venom drip... let me hear your venom drip...

The funny thing - is that the attempts to marginalize/discredit not through clever satire, but through intentional belittling mocking (and there is a difference in the art forms, so to speak) - actually suggest that the problem that one might think wasn't really there to begin with when reading the concern raised ..... perhaps really was. I like to think of it as clumsy performance art.

to ignore the points I and others brought up. They just don't want to face their own sexism or homophobia---they're happy in being complacent about not challenging their views. Hell, I can be sexist in some ways. I used the word "bitch" liberally before I knew the history of the word and decided not to use it against another woman or man. It's all about continuing to challenge your way of thinking and learning how to grow as a better person from that.

I guarantee you
After Bush is ousted this November, you could start up a thread raising issues of racism, sexism, homophobia. etc., and people would still be dismissive and mocking of the posters. It just seems to be the way things are on here when those issues are raised and a President Kerry and a Dem Senate will not change that.

given todays rather crass public discourse where those being rude are the ones that everyone defends for the free speech.. and those awful people exercising their free speech to object or criticize the rude (or worse, discriminatory) content should be piled upon to be silenced! And if that doesn't work... use limbaugesque type ridicule framed as humor to marginalize.

126. Enough of this
These divisive, inflammatory, wedge-issue threads are becoming disturbingly prevalent. This is disruptive. I'm locking, and I'm instructing the mods to lock any more of these type of threads until further notice.

We try very hard to be sensitive to these issues, and we want people to feel comfortable discussing them. But the manner in which these topics are being brought up is doing nothing to facilitate discussion or understanding. In fact, we're beginning to wonder if that's the whole point.
