Some people are racist, homophobic and the like...others are simply careless in the manner in which they express themselves and then rather than admit they erred, they become defensive.

We all have prejudices..what distinguishes prejudice from bigotry and racism is the ability to acknowledge a prejudice when confronted with it and an ability to examine the language or faulty reasoning that led to it.

Let me guess, most of the racial/bigoted comments started off with "now I am not a racist, but.....,", or "I got nothing against homosexuals, but...."

In all fairness though, there are a lot of net kiddies on DU that have a lot living to do, before they grab any real clue about anything. I have however, seen quite a few threads at DU that if one did not know better, would think they are reading free republic posts. Definitely not good, if you are trying to get a point across to someone from a different forum about democratic tolerance and diversity, and they throw a nasty flame war link pointing to one of these boards that is just as you describe.

for example, i had an exchange with a fellow here who posted a terribly homophobic post, which was promptly deleted. he didn't understand what he said that was so terrible...and he still didn't after we "discussed" it, ad nauseum.
which is why it's important to call people on the comments they make.
we all can use some assistance in evolving beyond where we are in consciousness...if we want to do so.
i know i've learned a lot on DU.

Many people call a poster racist or homophobic when they read that person's post. I've been called a racist because I said someone couldn't pronounce my name. If that is racism, I didn't know it!

There needs to be some guide lines and there needs to be some giving of the benefit of the doubt. I doubt either will happen because of the need of some here to force conformity to what they think we all should stand for.

There are certain remarks that are undoubtedly racist or homophobic, but there is also a grey area. It's unfair for any one person to set that definition. So branding someone a "racist" or "homophobe" just because one thinks they are is also, in my opinion, a bit unfair.

For the record, I avoid any comments that I think others may find offensive...often to a fault. But I also detest the overpolicing of language, and all of this recent talk of "banning" certain words makes me sick.

racism and discrimination against gays, it's an insult. I also think it can be used as a McCarthyist tactic to negatively brand those who don't agree with a certain viewpoint.

That being said, free speech covers racist, homophobic and sexist comments (although not on this board for good reason). Free speech also covers calling people racist, homophobic, and sexist as well. So there you go.
