The song has a whole different meaning than he originally intended.

3. My opinion has changed. I think Republicans made people think
the song was about Iraq. When I heard it, it made me sad to think a music artist was singing about 9/11 in order to justify Iraq. Knowing this was about Afghanistan and that in some ways the song applies more to the Bush's forgetting, makes me feel better. I think this guy should have made it clearer what his song was about and he would be hated less across the country. Actually it speaks to the divisive tone that Bush has set in America. We should have been able to all hear the song and remember, but instead we had to hear it and think about how divided we are. It makes me so mad how Bush took advantage of unity after 9/11. AAARRRGGGHHHHH!

Me, too. I had thought it was about Iraq, but when Al Franken said it was about Afghanistan, the songwriter didn't disagree.

5. I'm digging this show, actually
This is what "liberalism" is about: finding commonground among varying viewpoints and doing so with civility and humor.

6. yes, exactly...

That's one of the things I like about the Daily Show, Jon Stewart can interview Karen Hughes or whoever and stil keep it interesting and civil and entertaining. Likewise for the O'FF.

7. I agree.....and it sounds like Darryl may have undergone some
political transformations, too. Not my cup of tea music-wise, but if people like Darryl are realizing the true nature of this war...that can only be a good thing.

16. Me too
This is the best. These guys got to be friends and the all were obviously very affected by their common experience on the USO tour. This is exactly the kind of thing we need. Al knows what he's doing. He's bringing people over. I'll be Daryl Worely now has a completely different idea about liberals and liberal ideas.

.... that's the formula the right has used to effectively marginalize and demonize the left.

9. God Less America
HANNITY: All right. Why are some either radio consultants and radio stations -- that is a great song. And I'm going to play it on my show and I have more listeners than they do on theirs. But I want to know, why are they boycotting your song, some people?

WORLEY: Well, it's communism.

COLMES: Communism.

WORLEY: Well the bottom line is, you know it's a pretty typical thing nowadays that some consultant or programmer would control a number of stations, and just say, well, we'll dictate what our listeners hear. So it actually would get along real well with what you're saying.

OMG! CLear Channel wouldn't play the Dixie Chicks so that must mean that Clear Channel is run by (gulp) COMMUNISTS!

17. I'll defend Al...
Edited on Fri Apr-09-04 02:29 PM by higher class
He has his old friends who are conservative come on the show and allows them to speak their position in answer to very pointed questions and a lot of joking around.

The conversation with Worely was mostly reminising with stories they both told on each other about their initial negative opinions or caution about each other. I am one to hold a hard line (Kerry and Skull & Bones, for example or Clinton, Shurmer, Kerry, Daschle voting for the war), however I see Franken as bridging lines which can only be healing or reaching or both.

18. I think having conservatives on Al's show is a good thing
Because they go on Al's show, joke and josh around. Then they will go back to their family, friends, and colleagues and say "Gee, I had a great time doing that. Guess Liberals aren't the cartoons we protray them as."

Over time. This will tone down the rhetoric a lot, I think. But it's not an overnight job.

20. zackly.......such a good thread! so many wise people here, representing
different aspects of most POVs. I turned off part way through, cause I couldn't stand the sound of his voice, frexample.

but after hearing what the wise ones here have said, realize that they're right.....this can only help, and that perhaps some of the less delusional wingnuts can have their eyes opened.

mine were

also, did you love Al's question to him:

what'd you expect me to do introduce you like this to the soldiers---Your president LIED to you! Now you're all going to DIE! Here's Darryl Worley.

22. Worley isn't just a conservative
his song echoed Bush propaganda about Iraq being responsible for Sept. 11.

Doesn't mean he shouldn't be on the show, but I hope he gets confronted on this. I'll tune in to the repeat tonight and see what I think.

24. One thing that has become quite obvious in a few weeks...
Franken has zillions of friends and he's not afraid to cry - if anyone is going to help me heal, it might be him. He's zany, but very good hearted.

I think I'm getting close to my depths of anger and contempt for the right wing cabal because I've been thinking about 'healing' all day.

23. ohhh no a guest that doesn't think exactly like me
I think Franken should have more conservative guests. The point of air america is to convert people or at least get them to listen to our ideas which you will never do if everything on it is lockstep with some preconcieved political stance. Air America need to debate and hold not only others views up to scrutiny but its own views as well. Unless you are just looking for a radio show that reaffirms what you believe
