An anecdotal datapoint of Republicans admitting defeat
I spent this afternoon playing golf with the usual crowd of hard core Republicans that permeate the club I belong to.

Maybe a little background is in order. Back during the Afghanistan campaign, these people were always talking about America kicking ass and taking names on the terrorist scum that inhabit this planet. (Of course, I don't understand how Afghan children being bombed and categorized as unavoidable collateral damage equates to terrorist scum, but that is another story).

I have noticed lately that the subject never turns to politics, and I don't hear about how great GW is or any of that crap anymore.

But today, someone made a comment about Iraq looking like Viet Nam, and one of the freepers chimed in about how he thought what the military was doing about taking out all those "terrorists" was the right thing to do. To my amazement, a couple of people chimed in that it was like Viet Nam, and that this clusterfuck was going to cause George Bush the election, along with all the other stupid things he is doing. These people are Republican through and through, and their comments about George losing it were not happy comment, but couched in resignation.

I was floored. Maybe the tide is turning. I certainly hope so. I did challenge the freeper by asking him what his response would be to some foreign power coming into the US and killing tens of thousands of civilians, and whether he would want to fight back. He recognized the paradox, but it doesn't change his mind about killing Iraqis. Facts and reason never get in the way of these types, but it did at least give him pause.

1. This is LOVELY news. THANKS!
It ISN'T going to get much better on the Iraq scene. Sad that there has to be so much carnage, waste and stupidity before some of these people come around.

2. I would never belong to a club
that would have me as a member

or a bunch of Repug scum.

Glad to hear they are discouraged and having second thoughts.

Any sign that it reflects the slightest growth of conscience, or is it just sour grapes that the bushgang have screwed it up?

3. Repukes and conscience are oxymorons
I don't think they they are growing morals, its just that they recognize that daily reports of American lives being lost (the innocent civilians are of no consequence to them) is not playing well in Peoria. They are recognizing the futility of trying to use a military force to crush an inspired populace, and think that George is screwing them over by being stupid and inflexible.

4. clusterfuck... the place where I hang out uses this word

so often, we needed an acronym: c9k. I suppose the joke about those who know history are doomed to see it re-enacted badly are true. I try to remain more positive, but I think both sides have tendencies towards control, towards power... Give me a shout when they roll back the patriot act.

6. They're learning to shut their holes, but they'll still vote for Georgie
It truly boggles the mind how incredibly and purposefully ignorant these folks can be.

And ferchrissakes, aren't their backs about to give out from being bent over with their heads in the sand?
