"No Silver Bullet"
When strategic-systemic-structural Condi said "there was no silver bullet" I wanted to yell at the TV:

HOW ABOUT A LEAD BULLET??

Edited on Fri Apr-09-04 11:13 PM by Must_B_Free
Was to find a silver bullet for the victims of the families. ?!?

What the fugg does a silver bullet have to do with 911?

I guess Bush was expecting the Lone Ranger to save the day.

3. I have a silver bullet for you;
Air Marshalls.

With the amount of warning they had from the 8/6 memo, they could have;

Ordered all personnel of the DEA, FBI, Treasury, and Border services that were not engaged in counter-terrorism work to Quantico, VA for a crash course in being an Air Marshall.

One man in each aircraft with a clip full of frangible bullets would have made all the difference on the fatal morning of 9/11.

This is what should have been done.

This is what could have been done.

This is what they knew they could indeed do.

May all the gods damn them for their incompetence.

6. There was no silver PLATTER!
If someone would have come to Condi and said "We have intelligence that inidcates some guys from Saudi Arabia and Egypt, one of whom is named Mohammed Atta, will hijack between 3 and 5 American airliners taking off from east coast U.S. cities on the morning of September 11th, and then pilot them into prominent U.S. buildings in New York and D.C.", she would have frowned and said "Yeah, well get back to me when you have something more concrete. I need confirmation!"

8. As far as I can tell...
even if there was a "silver bullet" - I don't think Americans would stand for the extra screening and infringement on our liberties by triple-checking everyone prior to the attacks.

I suspect most Americans would accuse Bush of infringing on our rights.

I dunno - just what I think.

9. How about just apprehending the known terrorists?
Or how about just not letting them get on the plane with four-inch knives?

No need for triple checking. Two of the hijackers, I believe, were known to be in the country, but the airlines were not told to look for them.

Actually, what a "silver bullet" means is what I call a "silver platter": Condi needed to know exactly what was going to happen before she "moved heaven and earth" to stop it.

I hear her saying something like "If we had known which flights would be hijacked and on what date, we would have stopped it."

11. Who needs extra screening?
All you have to do usually is what Clarke and Clinton did - get the heads of the CIA and FBI in a room together every day with the Prez, and "knock a few heads together".

At least this is how a hands-on, CEO-type would do it.

I dunno - I just heard in some PDB that they knew of lots of Al Qaeda members in flight schools and sleeper cells before 9/11.

Could be worth a try before infringing on everyone's rights.

13. The conservative line that you need more draconian laws...
...is a pure crock.

When you have lists of known terrorist in the country going to flight schools, opening bank accounts and telephones in their own names, a couple of them living with an FBI informant...

you don't have to infringe on 99.999% of people's rights.

Just round up the possible terrorists.

Those guys whose photos they instantly published in the paper the afternoon of 9/11. Those guys.

Leave the rest of America and our freedoms alone and get the job done using the existing laws we have.

I am SO tired of hearing that we didn't have the intelligence we needed to go after the 9/11 guys.

We sure did twist the intelligence on Iraq to get our way in that situation! See, it can be done, when there's a will there's a way. Don't need no Patriot Act.

Contingency planning Pentagon MASCAL exercise

Washington, D.C., Nov. 3, 2000 — The fire and smoke from the downed passenger aircraft billows from the Pentagon courtyard. Defense Protective Services Police seal the crash sight. Army medics, nurses and doctors scramble to organize aid. An Arlington Fire Department chief dispatches his equipment to the affected areas.

snip

The Pentagon Mass Casualty Exercise, as the crash was called, was just one of several scenarios that emergency response teams were exposed to Oct. 24-26 in the Office of the Secretaries of Defense conference room.

On Oct. 24, there was a mock terrorist incident at the Pentagon Metro stop and a construction accident to name just some of the scenarios that were practiced to better prepare local agencies for real incidents.

10. Didn't Clinton turn down an offer of OBL from Pakistan?
I think so - even after OBL claimed responsibility for the fist WTC bombings.
