<snip>Just a few blocks away from the demonstrators, in a compound fortified by ochre-colored Abrams tanks, Capt. Jon Meredith, 28, of the 1st Cavalry Division, is trying to take a nap. He figures he has a few hours before trouble starts. "At 15:00 somebody blows a whistle, and the kids start throwing rocks and sheet glass and manure," he says, stretching his bare feet out on a couch. "They're all nice in the morning, and five hours later they're trying to break your face."
The real trouble begins after 8 p.m., when the sun goes down and the crooning voice of the mosque loudspeaker tapers off. The frequency of the attacks has lessened, says Meredith, but his troops are bracing for another night of rocket-propelled grenades and drive-by shootings. "I asked this guy the other day, `Why are you supporting Sadr?' and he said, `Because we are very poor, and he's the only one that will stand up for us,' " says Meredith, shaking his head. "And I could understand that."
