U.S. urged to compromise with al-Sadr

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The United States knows it has to seek a compromise with Moqtada al-Sadr, given the Shi'ite cleric's strong support and the sanctity of the city he is in, Iraqi Governing Council member Ahmad Chalabi says.

Chalabi, a long-time ally of Washington, said U.S. forces massing round the holy city of Najaf would face the wrath of millions of Shi'ites worldwide if they entered the city to capture or kill Sadr.

"Najaf must not be touched. This is what we told the coalition. We must seek a peaceful solution. On the other hand we must enforce the law in Iraq," Chalabi told Reuters in an interview on Wednesday.

Sadr, who has headed a Shi'ite revolt against the U.S.-led occupation in central and southern Iraq in recent weeks, has taken refuge with his armed followers in Najaf as a U.S. force builds up around the city.

1. Who is he to tell the US to do anything? He is a criminal who lied
and got us into this mess and is getting 1 Million a year to continue giving us "information". Besides, Iraqis hate his guts.

I'm sure Chalabi is working out some kind of deal with Al-sadr that will no doubt benifit him financially.

5. Urm...well Chalabi is right for once, but kinda weird for him to be saying
this...

There's some obtuse angle here but damn if I can the "co-sign" of it.

6. Chalabi knows
that he is wanted in Jordan and despised in Iraq, Iran and just about everywhere else on planet earth with the possible exception of 10 Downing Street and Washington DC.

Chalabi KNOWS that if anything untoward happens in Najaf, his American guards will most definitely find themselves VERY busy trying to stay alive.

Chalabi KNOWS that he is going to cop it as soon as his American guards are fixed.

Chalabi knows all this and he is not yet ready to die and he cannot easily leave Iraq, so he begins to tell the truth.

7. Chalabi has pandered like this before
he has appeared to criticize the U.S. from time to time, from right when he arrived there. But he still has more support from the Pentagon than he does from the Iraqis.

8. Ahmad Chalabi is dead if Fulluja is laid to siege
Chalabi also has an Army that tax payers are footing. Nothing like the Shi`ites in numbers.

9. Hmmm....Interesting since Chalabi is the one who wants al-Sadr dead.
I think this guy is really gonna burn the US big time and take us all down.

<snip>

"Ahmed Chalabi, the neocons' choice to run Iraq, appears to have been responsible for the disastrous decision to move against Muqtada al-Sadr."

Also, it looks like Chalabi gets a lot of money from the US for doing his dirty work.

<snip>

"He remains on the Pentagon's payroll -- $340,000 a month -- not counting the $40 million that he's received at the insistence of the Republican-dominated Congress over the past decade. He is a focal point of mistrust on all sides within Iraq."

10. For all the time that Bushco
mentions "Thugs" it amazing that Chalabi's never comes out of his mouth. He's more banana republic than Saddam was, wouldnt that be something if that puke actually brought Buchco down?

11. NOW he tells the neo-cons??
Was he not telling them right before the Shiite/al-Sadr uprising that al-Sadr had "very few followers"? WTF and when are these idiots going to get a clue?

12. Chalabi is the perfect poster child for the Bush foreign policy....
Driven by greed and power hunger, hated by all but his puppet-masters, whose strings he jerks in return. Kinda sounds like Dick Cheney, now that I think about it....
