Did you admire Paul Wellstone? |
|
Edited on Wed Apr-14-04 09:57 PM by mzmolly
Then honor him now by supporting an issue near and dear to him.
It takes 2 seconds to sign the petition.
Contributed by Wellstone Action
End Insurance Discrimination! Pass the Wellstone Mental Health Parity Bill
Although bipartisan support for the Wellstone Mental Health Equitable Treatment Act (S. 486) is strong and growing, Senate leaders have reneged on their commitment and are blocking the bill from a vote on the floor of the Senate. We must speak louder, and with greater determination, than the insurance industry! Tell our representatives to honor the promises made last year.
The Paul Wellstone Mental Health Equitable Treatment Act would close loopholes in federal law by requiring group health plans to stop using arbitrary limits on mental health parity benefits different from those used with medical and surgical benefits. With 69 co-sponsors, this legislation is sure to pass if brought to a vote.
It's up to us to keep the pressure on those key senators that have the power to allow a vote. Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH), chair of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee and Senate Majority Leader Dr. Bill Frist (R-TN) need to hear from us, and they need to hear from their fellow senators.
Call to action
Ask your senators to contact Senators Gregg and Frist and tell them to bring the Wellstone legislation to a vote. Mental illness affects millions of American families, untreated mental illness can be fatal, mental health parity is very affordable and discrimination in mental health care is unacceptable and must end!
Deadline: Ongoing
www.workingforchange.com/activism/action.cfm?ItemId=16748
Please sign the petition here and keep this kicked. Senator Wellstone cared a great deal about equality in health care for the mentally ill.
Thanks!

and he meant so much to me I will never forget Never! I know it may sound silly but darn it, it seemed like he was the only one in the Senate that understood. I appreciate other Senators don't get me wrong but Paul was 'The Man' he got it! He did not get on that floor and fight for the Corporation he fought for people like me when he got up there and I knew he was on my side! I come from a family of teachers (not me I'm the artsy fartsy one) which may be another reason that I hold a dear spot in my heart for him and if any one was 'Mr. Smith' it was Senator Paul Wellstone! :)

Have you read "Conscience Of A Liberal." It's a great book that explains his political thought process and gives some interesting personal history.
If you haven't read it, I'd recommend checking it out from the local library or buying a copy...

21. this may seem really trivial but |
|
i admired the hell outta him for, among other things but almost top of the list, his acceptance of his baldness.
how in the hell can you trust a politician's judgment when they are duping themselves with some pathetic comb over or aren't able to see their rug is a joke.
and what kind of personality does it take to arrange your life that there is no one in your inner circle that a) cares enough about you to tell you how foolish you look or b) feels they can be honest with you and tell you the same thing.
self deluding fool who surrounds himself with 'yes men' is what i see when i look at man trying to hide his baldness.
Wellstone never did that and it almost instantly made me trust and respect him more!

24. I think that's interesting. I am not *unattracted to bald men* and find |
|
many quite sexy personally.
Far more so than a rug. ;)
Paul was authentic in every way.
You feel the same way about baldness as I feel about small boobs in Hollywood. :P

I live in Mpls and am a member of Wellstone Action. The best thing about Paul was that he was a thorn in the side of the current administration and had independent thoughts. Rare concept nowadays! One always has to wonder what the world would be like if he were still alive? Could he have become President? Maybe, maybe not, but what a fireball!

44. So did I, and I'm not ashamed to admit it |
|
My VERY FIRST thought upon hearing the news:
The fuckers killed him!
And hey did...or they LIHOPped or sent his security/itinerary info to the Colombian "contractors".
Whatever. We'll never know. But we'll KNOW.
Wellstone was a great man. He could have been pResident (which is why he was murdered...he was the unacknowledged Leader of the Principled Democratic Opposition and honest enough to burn through the lies and Pravda).
I didn't always agree with his positions, but his integrity was perhaps the strongest in DC.
He will be as sorely missed as the other victims of the Imperial Family (Kennedy, Kennedy, King, among others).

Paul Wellstone was one of the finest people to ever serve in the U.S. Senate. I admired him tremendously.
I suffer from PTSD, clinical depression and (possibly) bipolar disorder, so I understand the importance of this issue.

40. Given how society causes many mental illnesses... |
|
This bill should pass. Especially how American society (corporations) has created it with the amount of stress and worry and paranoia it causes...
Wellstone was for the DOMA though. That only added to the stress and worry of lots of GLBT folk who voted for him, don't ever forget that. It's a bit ironic, really...
That aside, I loved the guy.
