3. Do you have anything other than vague speculation
To suggest that Germany and Japan are upset at our presense? In Japan's case they still do have potential enemies fairly close at hand (North Korea, China), and they are an ally.

Okinawa demands US exit in 15 years

TOKYO, March 24: The governor of a small Japanese island, a major base for US forces in Asia, took on the United States on Friday, saying he wanted troops in a disputed heliport to be out after 15 years.

Okinawa Governor Keiichi Inamine told a news conference that US military use of a new heliport set to replace part of a controversial base must be limited in order to send a message that U.S. troops will not be on the island forever.

Washington adamantly opposes any limits, citing security concerns.

can't speak for german citizens but i wouldn't be suprised if they were getting a little tired of our presence specially since the coldwar is OVER and we are acting like MADMAN.

hope that helps :hi:

5. Yeah, I can supply you with plenty, Bryant
Read Blowback by Chalmers Johnson and focus on the section dedicated to the US history of occupation in Okinawa. Okinawans do NOT like having us there -- especially considering our bases take up approximately 20% of the land area of Okinawa, most of it the most prime land on the island.

They also don't much care for our young Marines, sailors and airmen raising hell off post, getting into auto crashes, and then hiding under extraterritoriality.

Nor do they appreciate it when some of our armed forces members get together and carry out sexual assaults on local girls.

Nor do they care much for the constant noise and pollutions that results from our non-stop military maneuvers there.

As for your argument about Japan's "enemies", it doesn't hold water. North and South Korea were actually doing pretty good at calming hostilities until we stuck our nose into their matters once again. China is no more of an enemy to Japan than Taiwan is -- they are too dependent on each other, economically-speaking, for there to be considered any real danger of an outbreak of hostility. Furthermore, Japan has a significant defense force of their own -- especially an Air Force -- to repel any attack on their islands.

WRT Germany, it's not quite the same scenario -- but I have a close friend who grew up in Heidelberg, since his parents taught on the Army base there, and he has told me that even when he was there most of the locals were NOT happy about our presence there. Mostly for all of the disruption that goes along with having troops around (barfights, prostitution, petty crime, etc.). The "official" German stance has always been one of welcoming -- at least until recently -- but when you get down to the local level, the military presence is rather resented.

6. Long time, no see bpilgrim!
Good to see you here, as it has been a while! :hi:

Have you read Blowback by Chalmers Johnson? He devotes a great deal of time to the ongoing US garrisons on Okinawa, and how such arrangements are not exactly endearing us to people all over the world.

You would undoubtedly find it extremely interesting.
