Did Asscrack say he and his wife flew commercial on 3 Sept?
A local freeper is claiming Asscrack NEVER stopped flying commercial, but he's using Rush Limp-bahh as his source.

What is the source of the claim he STOPPED flying commercial? Anyone have a link?

1. during the 9/11 hearings it was brought up that he started flying
charter jets. He then claimed that this was "job" related and that his family continued to fly commercial. I'm still waiting for someone to check into this to see if it's true. Flight manifests are available if the commission decides to check up on this.

9. That makes absolutely no sense
how would his life be more threatened when he is flying on commercial than chartered. It has to be one or the other. To say that he is in more danger or his loss to the nation (Yeah, Yeah, OK,OK) is greater when he is traveling on official business than when on vacation is absurd.

11. Assuming his official travel schedule is public knowledge
and his personal time is not, it makes sense that he would be more in danger flying commercial while he is on duty, than when on vacation. To what degree he is safer is certainly debatable.

3. CBS News is the source

(CBS) Fishing rod in hand, Attorney General John Ashcroft left on a weekend trip to Missouri Thursday afternoon aboard a chartered government jet, reports CBS News Correspondent Jim Stewart.

In response to inquiries from CBS News over why Ashcroft was traveling exclusively by leased jet aircraft instead of commercial airlines, the Justice Department cited what it called a "threat assessment" by the FBI, and said Ashcroft has been advised to travel only by private jet for the remainder of his term.

"There was a threat assessment and there are guidelines. He is acting under the guidelines," an FBI spokesman said. Neither the FBI nor the Justice Department, however, would identify what the threat was, when it was detected or who made it.

-snip-

Asked if he knew anything about the threat or who might have made it, the attorney general replied, "Frankly, I don't. That's the answer."

Earlier this week, the Justice Department leased a NASA-owned G-3 Gulfstream for a 6-day trip to Western states. Such aircraft cost the government more than $1,600 an hour to fly. When asked whether Ashcroft was paying for any portion of the trips devoted to personal business, a Justice Department spokeswoman declined to respond.

4. This report also conflicts w/Ashcroft's testimony
He claimed, under oath, that he only flew on govt jets for official government business but continued to fly commercially in his private life. Since when does fishing fall under the category of official government business?

Rather: Be a Terrorist Target - Fly the Unfriendly Skies

If Dan Rather has his way, you could be flying on a commercial airliner unaware of the fact that your life was in danger because one of your fellow passengers was the target of a deadly terrorist threat.

In tonight's "CBS Evening News," Rather castigated Attorney General John Ashcroft for using private charter jets instead of commercial airline flights even though the FBI has warned Ashcroft that, because of a clear threat to his life, he must avoid public air transportation for his own sake and the sake of those who would be his fellow passengers on commercial flights.

Ashcroft, the FBI warned, is the target of a specific terrorist threat, a fact Rather managed to mention. Nonetheless, he condemned the attorney general for avoiding the use of commercial aircraft, blithely ignoring the dangers that would pose to those passengers who would be on the same commercial aircraft.

13. Ashcroft Also Said He Only Used Gov't Jet on Official Business - Perjury??
What sort of official business did he have with the fish?

Mr. Freeper misses the point. It isn't the details of whatever threat assessments that
the ashcroft was privy to. It is that he lied about it under oath. Blatantly.

12. You need to check the whole transcript from 911 hearing.
All you folks said is true, he did say that he only flew "government aircraft" for business, but flew commercial for personal. This may or may not be true, BUT he also said the reason was that those who travel with the AG while on business are often armed and as suce, would cause a possible threst to other passengers on commercial flights. I'm paraohrasing, but that was the gist of his statement.

You can check the actual testimony on www.911commission.gov
