3. I think it's a naval term...
...like when a large deck gun (petard) misfires, the blow back sends you flying (hoisted, as in to raise a sail)...meaning done in by your own weapon...very apt, in this case. The great thing is how little editing they had to do.

7. Not a naval term, but...
A petard was a primitive bomb back in medieval times (1500?). More or less a bucket of explosives with a fuse. You lit it, and ran for the gate of the castle to pace it. If your fuse was too long, it would just sit there and the castle defenders would have time to knock it off or snuff it. If your fuse was too short, it would go off while you were carrying it, sending you up in there air, "hoisting you by your own petard"...

10. Shakespeare, but I like the oldest french
The French used pétard, “a loud discharge of intestinal gas,”

for a kind of infernal engine for blasting through the gates of a city. “To be hoist by one's own petard,” a now proverbial phrase apparently originating with Shakespeare's Hamlet (around 1604) not long after the word entered English (around 1598), means “to blow oneself up with one's own bomb, be undone by one's own devices.”

The French noun pet, “fart,” developed regularly from the Latin noun pditum, from the Indo-European root *pezd–, “fart.”

9. Y' know
basically all this ad needed at the end was a Take Back the Media logo..

seriously, it looks like they've visited our site..

http://www.takebackthemedia.com

and I want the $$$$ they are getting for their fine imitation :)

it works, tho to be honest I think I would have made a better version.. I'd thought about the 30 second lapse..

finally a decent ad by these guys.

11. Good
How anybody can watch that and still think he's some kinda great heroic leader is beyond me.

"I wish you'd have given me this written question ahead of time."

"It was Oral Asshole."

"'Scuse me. I'm under a spot."
