More newspapers requiring on-line registration. I went to the AJC's |
|
web site this morning, and had to register on-line to read the articles. How long before they start charging to view their sites?

1. ajc's registration is the worst |
|
no other paper asks for so much personal info. I registered using a yahoo email and none of the info I gave them was remotely similar to my real info.

3. The Post just did this |

I have yet to create a bogus profile for them, but I will.
I don't know about most folks, but I do my best to create outliers -- maximum/minimum salary and age. I think on one system I am a 102-year-old millionaire.

2. many are already charging... |
|
which I think is stupid. (I publish a small midwestern weekly).
There are reasons to ask readers to register, however, that have nothing to do with charging. Making readers register (even if they use fake info) provides the newspaper with a more accurate reader count than standard counters provide. Newspapers need accurate reader counts to provide to advertisers so that they can continue to offer content for free.
Just my 2 cents.

5. Some have compromised, like the New York Times... |
|
...registration is pretty easy...reading the current stuff is free, but you pay for anything archived. What Krugman said this week is free, but if you want to check his column from back in mid March, you pay for it.

6. blech, pay for archivals... |
|
NYT can kiss my big, fat library system. full of juicy, runny archivals and intralibrary relations, too. may the ink of their freely printed articles dribble off their slack-jawed, apoplectic tongues.
freedom of information. god bless librarians. they fight the good fight when nobody is watching.

If the Times could write like that, I'd pay for their archives. On second thought...no, not even then.
