Charles Rangel (sp?) and the Draft
He co-sponsored one of the draft bills with his stated reason being that he knew it wouldn't pass because our Reps and Senators wouldn't want thier children to fight a war they knew was unjust. Well, the latest rumor is that it may pass and the Pentagon would like to implement it before June 2005.

Does this reason just not sit well with anyone else?

1. It seems really unconstitutional to me...
Universal service? Isn't that basically a temporary form of slavery?

Glad I'm too damn old, but hate the idea of it happening to the kids who had nothing to do with our asinine "foreign policy" mistakes.

Crazy that the course of the world is being molded to conform to the damn "Left Behind" books.

2. DU has had several posts about the draft lately...

Personally, I think it will happen unless we can get the word out to the chickenhawks and the head-in-the-sand types. If those two groups realize that their (or their children's/grandchildren's) butts are on the line, they will protest.

Here are some draft info links:

http://www.bushdraft.com
http://www.sss.gov/PDFs/NovDec2003-Register.pdf
See page 6. Plans are being prepared to draft people with technical or medical skills, between the ages of 20 and 44.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,2763,1184960,00.html
This Guardian story reports that members of the military injured (physically or mentally) are being sent back to Iraq long before they are fit to return, simply because the troops are stretched so thin.

I've heard arguments as to why the draft won't happen. I think it's a better idea to make sure it doesn't happen, than to assume it won't.
