Question about late U.S. Sen. John Heinz (R-PA)

This stems from a conversation I overheard last night between a repub and others about Teresa Heinz.

The comment was something to the effect that Teresa Heinz had basically shed her roots and flipped sides.

As I recall, her late husband was not really a Republican by today's standards, and was more of a centrist Democrat in what was at the time a moderate state.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Heinz died shortly after I moved here, so I am unsure of the issue, but I would love to know so I can argue with facts if it ever comes up again.

1. Teresa Heinz and Arianna Huffington follow similiar arcs...

...both were "moderate" Republicans engaged in charitable social and environmental causes. In the Clinton era, one could do that. But with the GOP now forcing moderates out of their party, it's not uncommon for these types to become independents. Their concern for social and environmental causes naturally pulls them left rather quickly.

2. Among other things...

he was a progressive, pro-seniors, pro-environment, pro-civil rights, pro-worker's safety fella.

He was a reasonable, patrician guy who died horribly 3 minutes from my home.

He was what used to be a 'Rockefeller' Republican - humanistic, and traditionally conservtive without the hate and ignorance and greed.

I've never voted for a Republican, including him, but he was a decent fellow.

Sen Heinz would be castigated as a liberal in the present rethug party-he was a major enviormentalist-that alone would make him anathema to the Grand Sold Out Party
