Did Bob Schieffer just call Bushco a TOTALITARIAN REGIME? I hope so.

Bob Schieffer (Face the Nation)said that at the end of program.
Talking about Woodward's book.
It is important to report the facts, especially in totalitarian regimes that want to be the only sources of news.
!!!!!!!

1. Bob remembers a time before the media merges of the 80's
when big corporations swallowed TV networks up and gutted the news departments, insisting they start 'paying their own way'. There was a bit more journalism going on back then and not so many hair dos just reading press releases. The Fourth Estate was a bit more maverick and served the nation better in those days.

The corporations took {strangle}hold of TV/media news back in... no, don;t tell, me... it'll come... oh, yeah, Reagan/Bush 1.... hmmmmm, ya think it was a plan?

2. But this is the first time I hear somebody on TV even imply this.
Do you think the implication will be perceived by the attack dogs? That might be what we need to bring it to the foreforont.

5. I sure agree with you
The program is just now going to start here where I live. If he stated it as has been related here, then I think he was jabbing them in the ribs on purpose and I applaud him! Let them answer the charge!

9. I've been going back and forth between FTN and MTP
I'm going to watch the end of it to catch his statement. Will post after that.

10. Okay -
He said that Bob Woodward acted in the tradition of American journalist by checking his sources before reporting. And that's different from how things are in totalitarian countries.

Seems to me that he was giving the press their marching orders to be more accurate and to stop being lapdogs. Just an implication. That's how I took it. He was speaking so calmly that I might have missed his point. But I think he was giuving an admonishment to the press. Pretty cool stuff! I think you were on the right track.

7. I always figured Bob Schieffer was
a staunch old guard pubbie. His word carries a lot of weight in jouralistic circles does it not? He is obiously taking a swipe at bushco* with that little rejoinder.
