Violence in Iraq will get even worse, says Blair
Edited on Sun Apr-18-04 04:51 PM by number6
By Melissa Kite in Washington and Alex Thomson in Basra

Tony Blair will tell MPs tomorrow that Britain should be prepared for worse violence in Iraq in the coming weeks.

The Prime Minister believes that British and American troops must brace themselves for "acts of desperation" by anti-Coalition rebels as the June 30 deadline for the handover of sovereignty in Iraq draws closer, senior advisers to Mr Blair said yesterday.

>now take note of this qoute ...<

"A crowd of 150,000 people at the gates of this barracks would be the end of this, as far as I'm concerned," Brig Carter said. "There would be absolutely nothing I could do about that."

> yea, there wouldn't be would there ...<

British officers in Basra are also worried about the stand-off at the twin holy cities of Najaf and Kufa, where the fiery Islamic cleric, Moqtada al-Sadr, has taken refuge from 2,500 American troops determined either to capture or kill him. "If the Americans go into Najaf, there will be 300 Fallujahs," said one officer.

1. So after June 30 then what?
More bloodshed. All of this June 30 hype is B.S.

Bush (and Blair) do not have a plan. The govt. gets "turned over" to what authority? Who? Why do they keep up the propaganda that the current insurgency is going to get worse until the magical day of June 30.

There's no magic in it. Our troops will stay there and after June 30 there will be the same amount of trouble as now,and maybe even worse, imo.

3. Strings or no strings, what part of THEY DON'T WANT US THERE
don't these clowns understand.

They (the Iraqis) are not stupid people, they are not a third world country full of uneducated, backward people. This is a nation that has a very sophisticated, ancient society. And they know a bunch of thugs, liars, and thieves when they see them. They know that the current administration's intentions NEVER had anything to do with liberation and freedom. So no matter what happens, even after the handover, there will still be violence.

4. "Acts of desperation????????????"
The only people I see getting "desperate" are the invading hordes and their cheerleading minions, and their idiotic leaders.

It seems to me that the Iraqi rebellion is in full swing and that they are quite energized.

5. That shows how successful we are!
That's the up-is-downism of Bush and Blair. The Iraqis are growing increasingly violent because......wait for it......we are on the brink of success! On June 30th Iraq will magically turn democratic and all problems solved!

6. How can you not separate
'the Iraqis' in general from violent insurgents/rebels/terrorists that make up a small number people? There is no general uprising against occupying forces in Iraq.

And the 'handover' is civil administrative duties, not security matters. No one is claiming that security will be handed over at that time, but at the same time it would be nice if we had some leadership that would promote that point effectively.
