99. no, not enough
Powell sold his soul by being the misadministration's envoy and mouthpiece to the UN.

He was against the war, he knew it was Bushit, yet he spread that convincing manure to the Security Council of the UN, to the press and to many gullible Americans. Fuck him.

He should have resigned and spoken out. He should have saved lives instead of being "the good soldier," as Woodward euphemistically put it.

Powell has no spine, no morals, no balls and no more credibility.

157. The point is Richard Clarke has been taken seriously
1. His book is fucking number one

2. He was and is the superstar of the 911 Hearings

3. He is in the news everyday as being an extremely creditable source of information

Only folks that aren't paying attention seem to believe Clarke has been swept under the rug.

Because you haven't seen Clarke re-make the circuit of networks, doesn't mean he's been forgotten.

161. I understand that, but...
We know he's credible...we're reading his book...we seek him out for information, and just for the record, I DO pay attention. What I was saying, and I'm sorry if it was confusing, is that if you look at the big picture, the White House has been pretty successful at destroying people who go against them: O'Neill, Shinseki, Clarke, Medicare Actuary, et al, and they have been able to spin away all of it. I know what Clarke said during his testimony was astonishing, and I'll believe someone who's been fighting terror for 30 years like Clarke has before I'll believe somebody like Bush who couldn't handle a Boy Scout troop meeting. Keep in mind that the majority of the American people sadly DO NOT pay attention like we do...and that's a tragedy in and of itself. So, try and look at it from an average American...kinda in the middle, workin' hard, may like to see Shrubby "kicking ass" in Iraq...if that guy doesn't see this, or frankly -understand- it, then the White House is successful once again.

176. I believe what you're saying, but here's the thing...
Americans still think this war was a good thing. If what you're saying (which I like because it's incredibly optimistic) was true, then approval for the Iraq war would be down to practically nothing, and not 57%...I know it's hard to look at this whole thing through different eyes, but in order to objectively see the real impact this shit has on the American people, you're gonna have to let go of the fact that you're an intelligent, informed, concerned patriot.

(that's a compliment BTW)

Failure.

I don't think they have any choice. See, there's this "inconvenient" thing called the Constitution that says we have these "freedoms" like "freedom of speech" (until someone hears what you say) and "freedom of the press" (unless you print bad things about the administration or their buddies). They'll sure try to discredit Woodward, just like they tried to do with Clarke, there's just one.small.problem...THEY ARE TELLING THE TRUTH! No matter what they say or do, it is the truth, and that infuriates them.

Let's think of this positively...this is the beginning of the END of George W. Bu$h

They were just looking for a rationale for it.

This "liberate people" is crap. It's pr for publication.

Pity Woodward didn't ask George how the mandate to "liberate people" jibed with his campaign statements about not doing nation building. Where did the impulse suddenly appear from? When he ran out of excuses?

197. We WANT that!!!
I have wanted the press to hold him responsible for this administration for a very long time. Until we do that, he gets a free pass. This is actually a pretty unflattering picture of him. This shows his grandiosity, lack of curiosity, and willingness to ignore facts.
Aslong as people just think he's dumb, he gets a free pass and noone holds him responsible for anything. In that case- maybe to the less enlightened, all needs is a new administration and he'll make fine president for the next four years....if gas prices go up.
Until HE known as the guy who ignored facts and didn't do the job the way he was supposed to by asking the right people the right questions, people will assume it's not his fault. People are more likely to be convinced that he needs to be voted out if they think he is directly responsible.

154. My gut reaction was the same but
There is a discussion about this on the other thread.

The Iraq resolution was passed in Oct 2002, Bush was given free reign.

We are not at offical war with Saudi Arabia, although a case might be made that they are one of the states which harbor terrorists, given all the madrassas which preach hate against us.

It does *feel* like treason but under the legal definition it isn't.

The misappropriation of funds on the other hand is a crime. I wonder why Bush told Woodword about this. Perhaps he didn't realize this was illegal? He isn't well versed in government policy.

And the Repubs have the NERVE to complain that Kerry is somehow unethical by talking to other foreign leaders about who should be president. That is so WRONG. Even he didn't buy what Tenet was telling him. Just because Tenet reassures that it's a "slam dunk case" doesn't make the evidence any more convincing.

145. There have been different accounts
Edited on Sun Apr-18-04 07:53 PM by chookie
In Suskind's book, Paul O'Neill reports that in the first Cabinet meeting in Jan 2001, Iraq was one of the two topics of discussion (Israel was the other one). O'Neill says Tenet pulled out a number of satellite photos of factories and other sites in Iraq, and ominiously warned they might be places where weapons were being manufactured. Cheney bent over the images "with uncharacteristic excitement (p 72).

O'Neill, never one to keep his mouth shut when he smells bullshit, said that he'd seen lots of factories around the world, and that this one looked EXACTLY like the others, and couldn't see anything that would make him think anything was amiss, and Tenet was only able to respond with some slight circumstantial evidence."

Now -- this account makes me think that Tenet was "in the loop" of starting the war with Iraq, or at least was doing what he was told to "find a way to do this for me" at Bush's orders.

Clarke, on the other hand, tells of a different Tenet, in a constant state of alarm over the overhanging threat of Al Qaeda, and not obsessed with Iraq.

What's up?

What's Woodward's game? Was he kissing ass opportunistically by heroically playing up Bush's behavior after Sept 11? Or did he have a deeper game -- to gain the confidence of His Chimperial Highness, and be allowed to have continued access, because it was felt he would be a faithful lapdog?

Let's see what comes out of the WH over the next few days. If they attack him hard, we'll know he was acting as Trojan Horse. Or if he is distracting from the unfolding revelation of Bush entering office with the intent of carrying out the PNAC program by throwing out enticing red herrings.

174. Could it be that those who were close to Bush* at the beginning
of the Iraq war has now realized that they fucked it up and are now scrambling to distance themselves from the creation of (an increasingly) unpopular conflict? Tenet is no fool and, perhaps, former CIA director Daddy Bush* is rushing in to save 'his boy' from himself and the extreme neo-cons around him. Also, anyone can see that invading and occupying Iraq, redirecting funds from the war in Afghanistan, and alienating friendships with old Allies has done nothing to erase the threat of Al Quaeda.

196. Given Woodward's background, i am starting to think that it really was...
a deep cover, the ass-kissing book i mean. If so, it was absolutely brilliant. Hats off. Because, you know, that is the ONE way anyone would have gotten that kind of story about Bush & co: suck up to him. Bush is a classic narcissist: that is absolutely his weak spot. These people are weirdly naive like that: you can tell them the most outrageously over-the-top flattery and they'll eat it up without a second thought about what your motives might be. You could be an ax-murderer *and* robbing the narcissist blind right in front of him, but as long as you keep pouring on the treacly words, you're one of the good guys. And of course the converse is true: a lot of the bizarre cut-off-your-nose-to-spite-your-face behavior we've witnessed from Georgie (the U.N. snubs) are just about that: he couldn't stand that they criticized him, therefore they are Bad. never mind the practicalities of it: they Criticized Him! Off With Their Heads!

well, god bless Woodward; i don't know how he stomached it. I mean, some people (coughBlaircough) are made for this sort of thing; if you're not it's damn near impossible to fake it. i mean, you REALLY have to do it 24/7 if you want to stay in the narcissist's good graces. i have watched this dynamic in action several times: it is disgusting even from a distance.

Prince Bandar enjoys easy access to the Oval Office. His family and the Bush family are close. And Woodward told 60 Minutes that Bandar has promised the president that Saudi Arabia will lower oil prices in the months before the election -- to ensure the U.S. economy is strong on election day.

Woodward says that Bandar understood that economic conditions were key before a presidential election: “They’re high. And they could go down very quickly. That's the Saudi pledge. Certainly over the summer, or as we get closer to the election, they could increase production several million barrels a day and the price would drop significantly.”

119. Suspicious
I think it is correct to be suspicious.

But, I also think we tend to underestimate how the "will of God" argument plays with a sadly large proportion of population. And I also think that because most of us see it somewhere along a range of stupid to outright terrifying, we tend not to realize just how serious Bush* is about it. And I mean really serious to the point of believing that God will pull him through whatever the "heathens" of the world throw at him for believing such things.

The man is a fanatic and one with an admitted disdain for logic and intellect. I think we probably were told, in large part, what we were intended to hear, but I also think Bush* may just believe it was the right thing.

What I just heard from Woodward scared the hell out of me.

109. Woodward is about as middle-ground as exists in the US
The one possibility no one ever entertains is that he calls things like he sees them. Bush at War was a Valentine because Woodward was impressed with the Afghan war. Path to War is a hatchet job because Woodward is appalled by the Iraq war. That's not so odd... millions of people feel that way.

He's a Republican who wanted Nixon impeached and doesn't want Bush re-elected... There used to be tons of these guys around when I was a kid. (Republican moderates disappeared almost entirely in 1994.)

140. Funny scene in ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN
Woodward and Bernstein are softening up a Republican source and Woodward says he's a Republican himself. Bernstein shoots him a look with two possible meanings, either Woodward had gone way too far by lying to a source or (even weirder) he was actually a Republican. Woodward shrugs at Bernstein and says, "I am!"

If memory serves, Woodward started out as a press officer for the Navy and worked in the Pentagon, for what that's worth.

150. He was Naval Intelligence
I did a spate of research on Woodward a couple years ago, just to satisfy my curiosity. I cannot recreate my sources -- sorry -- but I was particularily struck by several stories about his pre-Post connections to the intelligence community.

Added to the information I had been encountering regarding the CIA's virtual ownership of the Post under Graham. And considering who stood to gain with Nixon's downfall (hint: bushco)...

Well, I'm going to remain suspicious. This book is telling a tale that SOMEONE wants us to hear. Woodward is working for SOMEBODY.

If this book leads to either Tenet's, and/or Powell's removal from the scene, I will take it as VERY bad news about which faction of the Oligarchy/Security State is consolidating control.

74. Bush's disdain for the intellectual world
No doubt, because he is a failure at that world, and digging himself deeper as a failure, as the national and international contempt for his stupidity grows. I have never made a Bush-Hitler analogy before, because I think they are generally trivializing, and wrong. But when it comes to personality traits, this is an especially shocking similarity. Like Hitler, the failed artist, the failed architect, would put the cities of the world to sword and fire, Mr. Bush, the failed thinker, the failed strategist...what will he do? How will his self-loathing manifest itself?

The Saudies traded the invasion for a huge drop in oil prices this summer. We're seeing the "dramatic" spike now--the equally dramatic drop will happen when it's opportune for Chimp.

I have no problem with anyone, including Presidents, appealing to a higher power for wisdom. This guy, however, seems to think that he has a direct line to God, and that God is telling him what to do. At least now we know what Jr. plans to do. Watch out everyone living under a government that Jr. doesn't like. Hey, how about the French?

And what a Daddy problem! He has a father uniquely experienced in international affairs (whether you agree with him or not), and he doesn't consult him at all? It was a complete diss of his Dad. I wonder what Babs thinks of this. No wonder Dad had Brent Scowcroft and others all over the place before the invasion urging caution: Jr. apparently won't talk to him about this stuff!

When Woodward was saying that Bush was asking Tenet, "Is that all there is" and Tenet replies to him that "It's a slam dunk", was he talking about finding the WMD, or was he talking about convincing the public that we have to do this because of threat of WMD? I'm foggy on this issue of guaranteed success on which issue.

129. This may offer the answer
From their website:

”McLaughlin has access to all the satellite photos, and he goes in and he has flip charts in the oval office. The president listens to all of this and McLaughlin's done. And, and the president kind of, as he's inclined to do, says ‘Nice try, but that isn't gonna sell Joe Public. That isn't gonna convince Joe Public,’” says Woodward.

In his book, Woodward writes: "The presentation was a flop. The photos were not gripping. The intercepts were less than compelling. And then George Bush turns to George Tenet and says, 'This is the best we've got?'"

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/04/15/60minutes/main612067.shtml

It is not entirely clear if Tenant means selling the story is a slam dunk or that they will find WMD's is a slam dunk, but above was the context.

They're fixed, by the highest levels of government, in cooperation and agreement with a foreign monarchy.

They're high now, so that by contrast, they'll appear incredibly low when the Saudi Princes exercise their OPEC influence and increase oil production, just in time for the election.

No wonder he wears a constant smirk. He already knows the outcome.

As for the creepy Jesus-freak "we'll all be dead" comment, well, that was just chilling, and rather insane. Reason enough to be firmly ABB.

147. Now I understand why W could give a crap about the environment
We're all going to perish, so we have only a limited amount of time to roll back environmental rules, allow for sky-high corporate profits (to benefit the Republican-contributing CEOs, not the labor force), and in general trash the planet.

I don't know why it took me so long to catch on. I guess I should resign from my EPA career tomorrow and stand on the sidewalk with a sign saying "The sky is falling" because, apparently, it is, or will be soon.

When Bush said it was a Crusade right after 9/11, and his handlers said he didn't really mean it, they were wrong. He meant it.

As Barney Fife used to say, "He's a nut!"
Unfortunately, he is not a benign or otherwise harmless nut.
Even North Korea understands that.

Let's see what Congress does when it convenes this week. Let's see if Frist goes to the floor of the Senate and castigates Woodward the way he did Clarke.

Let's see it any Congressional Dems take this stuff seriously and demand accountability, to start with, that 700 million, but don't stop there. The apparent manipulation of gas prices is another thing...does this not sound like the Enron manipulation of energy prices that brought CAlifornia to its knees a couple years ago? Does this not all wreak to high heaven of Cheney?

I didn't think Woodward painted Bush in an innocent, soft, positive light at all!

A dude wandering around the circle behind the White House, praying his way into war, seeking God's advice rather than the advice of his father, the PREVIOUS PRESIDENT with EXPERIENCE IN GULF WAR ... a disengaged doofus, letting himself be pushed around by his henchmen (which we all knew) -- clearly not doing his job as president (not questioning, not discerning on his own what's the best course of action for his country, etc.) ... a guy COMPLETELY run by his PNAC brethren, a guy TOTALLY in bed with the leadership of a country (saudi arabia) that produced most of the hijackers of 9/11 ...

God ... Woodward may seem to lean right lately, but I think what he said tonight should be seen as devastating to this White House. And I think Colin Powell, who could have been the hero, the voice of reason, should be so friggin' ashamed of himself.

And Woodward sees Bush as a guy who is (pardon me, Blues Brothers) on a "mission from God" to bring freedom to the masses (of oil-producing countries, at least).

158. Woodward is no Bush lover
And until someone can find a link proving it I'll remain unconvinced. I believe most of this feeling revolves around the "Bush at War" book which I've read. I found it to portray Bush in both positive and negative lights.

But I agree, this interview was damning. The whole gas pricing fixing issue regardning the election is a stunning revelation previously known by some, but never brought into the light of day on a program like 60 minutes.

No, the only rational conclusion after watching this interview is that it was very damning to Bush. Anyone who sees otherwise is non objective and pursuing an agenda.

on Drudge Report site ... over the headline about how she's slamming Woodward's book.

She looks like she's trying to be a centerfold for the National Review!

198. Watch her interview with Scheiffer
I once knew a hostage negotiator, who told me the surest sign of a liar is wandering eyes. In that Scheiffer interview, Condi's eyes were shooting all over the place, always at the key moments during her lines of thought. She was lying...

163. I agree with John H
We're going to find out if the Democratic Party is worth anything or not.

If they can't defeat this crazed nut, then they're good for nothing.

181. Don't forget the October Surprise
It's been awhile now, but Jimmy Carter tried and tried to free hostages held in the Middle East. It became the sole basis upon which to judge his term of office -- somehow. Would the hostages be freed? And they weren't -- we found out later, some of us who paid attention, that it was because the Rs made a secret deal that the hostages would be held until after the election, and that would defeat Carter, in favor of Reagan.

So, manipulating oil prices with the assistance of the Saudis is just one more way to manipulate "facts" that sway public opinion at crucial political moments.

The California black-outs and energy crisis were brought about by a complex number of players in energy companies like Enron, and government, like Bush who refused to intervene until much damage was done. Did that manipulate an election? Well, the so-called energy crisis was blamed on Gray Davis, and along comes a recall election, and you know the rest.

The Bushes and Saudis have been in bed together for decades -- read Kevin Phillips' book. On the other hand, I've seen one allegation that the Saudis have so much money sloshing around that many members of Congress have taken some.

I haven't seen the book specifically dealing with the relationship between Saudis and Bushes yet. House of Saud, House of Bush
But there was a long article in Salon, an excerpt, about the Saudis being flown out after 9/11, when all other aircraft were grounded.

THE GREAT ESCAPE

http://www.salon.com/books/feature/2004/03/11/unger_1/print.html

An excerpt:

Bandar went to work immediately. If any foreign official had the clout to pull strings at the White House in the midst of a grave national security crisis, it was he. A senior member of the Washington diplomatic corps, Bandar had played racquetball with Secretary of State Colin Powell in the late '70s. He had run covert operations for the late CIA director Bill Casey that were so hush-hush they were kept secret even from President Ronald Reagan. He was the man who had stashed away 30 locked attaché cases that held some of the deepest secrets in the intelligence world. And for two decades, Bandar had built an intimate personal relationship with the Bush family that went far beyond a mere political friendship. First, Bandar set up a hotline at the Saudi embassy in Washington for all Saudi nationals in the United States. For the 48 hours after the attacks, he stayed in constant contact with Secretary of State Colin Powell and National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice. Before the attacks, Bandar had been invited to come to the White House to meet with President George W. Bush on Sept. 13 to discuss the Middle East peace process. Even though the 55-year-old president and he were, roughly speaking, contemporaries, Bandar had not yet developed the same rapport with the younger Bush that he'd enjoyed for decades with his father. Bandar and the elder Bush had participated in the shared rituals of manhood -- hunting trips, vacations together, and the like. Bandar and the younger Bush were well known to each other, but not nearly as close. On the 13th, the meeting went ahead as scheduled. But in the wake of the attacks two days earlier, the political landscape of the Middle East had drastically changed. A spokesman for the Saudi embassy later said he did not know whether repatriation was a topic of discussion. <snip>

170. It just finished on the West Coast
That is some creepy stuff.

It again reinforces the idea that Bush decided to go to war and then sought justifications for it. Woodward has the idea that Bush would ask his underlings more than once, but would accept wavering answers with little thought.

Cheney and Rumsfeld come across as a couple of Svengalis and Tenent as a suck up. Powell is portrayed as the good soldier who let a sense of duty override his better judgment. Tommy Franks come across as a dutiful liar.

On the whole, nobody who could have told Bush he was on the wrong path had the courage to tell him that.

172. Just watched Woodward on 60 minutes.

My reaction is "fucking scary". Woodward verified much I thought about GW Bush and his cabal. His belief that he's doing God's work and his anti-intellectualism for example.

Some other things I had heard about but remained a little skeptical. His apparant estrangement from his father and his family's attachment to the Saudi royal family for example.

Looking forward to reading Woodward's book. I think it'll make Richard Clark's book look like a pro-Bush campaign flyer.

180. If you are doing God's Work (ha Ha) Why do you need his forgiveness?
Did you catch that ? Every Christian who has had their faith hijacked by this moran should have caught that blooper.
You don't say God forgive me for what I am about to do..
And if it is God's will..he gives Blessings..Not Forgiveness !
He is psychotic ! Good case against the wingers !

184. Be careful, Woodward is making for that little pass by of *.
Making the space for the * in that * mis-advised by zealots. My bet, truth be told it would seem Saddam was *'s number priority from the word go. * needs a slam dunk into the slammer.

Seven-hundred million of misappropriated funds to start premeditated war in Iraq, then misleading congress on the whole affair to the extent of forging evidence :nopity:

Btw when does the word TREASON kick in ?

185. Does anyone else feel uneasy about this?
Woodward did divert some of the blame from Bush by suggesting that Tenet was partly to blame for the Iraq war, through the assertion that the evidence which we now know as non-existent would be a "slam dunk". But Woodward also related some very scary things about Bush, about the diversion of $700 million, the Saudis being informed about the Iraq invasion before Powell, about the Saudis promising to fix the price of oil in time for the election, about Bush's anti-intellectual attiTude, about his Messianic complex, etc.

HOW CAN THE MOST SECRETIVE ADMINISTRATION IN HISTORY LET WOODWARD INTO THEIR CONFIDENCE LIKE THIS AND, BETTER YET, WALK AWAY WITH A TAPE RECORDER FULL OF DAMAGING QUOTES???

Sorry to yell, but I feel very uneasy about this. Why did they do this? Could it be that the 911 commission is about to stumble onto something earthshaking and Bush wants out? This seems like political suicide.

186. I think you're right to be suspicious
We really have to give this the full 360 degree examination.

It just seems like too much to me.

How would they be able to use this to their advantage? Does their focus group research tell them that the more Bush is attacked and "secrets" are revealed, the stronger the electorate clings to him?

Did his number go up after Clarke's book was published?
Did they go up after Dean's book came out?

Clarke and Woodward's books both under Viacom family, and "60 Minutes" breaks both exclusives?

I'm not drawing any conclusions yet, just pondering some points.

187. You're right - it is a little fishy...
But remember, supposedly this was taking place over a year ago, when the administration was even more overconfident & full of hubris. I'm as inclined to think they were invincible, since they now "own" all branches of government and needn't fear any checks & balances. And with Rove as Chief Orwellian, they probably didn't give it a second thought.

I remember the disbelief on my part that Nixon ended up with so much damning evidence having been tape-recorded. What was HE thinking? Some interesting - no, frightening - parallels going on between those 2 administrations...
