The look on Mike Wallace's face when Woodward told him ...
Edited on Sun Apr-18-04 07:52 PM by TruthIsAll
that Bush believes he is sent here to do God's work said it all. It was a look of wonder, disbelief, disgust and even a touch of fear.

Imagine, a President planning on going to war, telling the Saudis before his own staff. Secretly funding the Iraq build up for a war which he was determined to start - with funds previously allocated by Congress for Afghanistan and Bin Laden.

This is impeachable. Woodward implied it without saying so.

Yes, Mike, this is your Resident. Tonight was your turn to hear the words of a powerful establishment figure who knows all about the Bush horror. From the inside. Right from the Chimp's own mouth.

Woodward brought down Nixon 30 years ago. He is a lot more than a journalist. He is obviously a very powerful man. Someone who is very well connected and who is doing what his superiors are telling him to do.

It's another Watergate. Only a lot worse.

First O'Neil. Then Clarke. Now Woodward. And waiting in the Wings: Joe Wilson.

Can Bev Harris and Greg Palast be far behind?

There should no longer be any doubt:

53. Role Reversal???
Cheney takes aim at Kerry in speech to NRA" ... very very scary

Interesting... don't the candidates for President usually take aim at the other candidates?

Is Cheney not the Vice-President? What is he doing campaigning against the Democratic candidate? Fine that he supports his pResident... that's to be expected. But can't the pResident speak for himself when some spurious attack on Senator Kerry is "the plan"?

Is Cheney going to do all Bush's campaigning for him? Including the debates? What's going on here?

20. Dudley is equally afraid
Here is something else to scare your socks off:

Members of the usually media-wary Bush family seem surprisingly unguarded in talking to the authors, and some of their remarks could well disconcert a White House in campaign mode or ratify opponents' worst fears. For instance the Schweizers quote one unnamed relative as saying that George W. Bush sees the war on terrorism ''as a religious war'': ''He doesn't have a p.c. view of this war. His view of this is that they are trying to kill the Christians. And we the Christians will strike back with more force and more ferocity than they will ever know.''

Now if he would just get that same look of wonder, disbelief, disgust and fear when an Islamic radical makes the same statement, we'd be on our way to a constructive discourse.

Apparently, you think Mr. Wallace should be just as shocked that militant extremists from theocratic nations in the middle east would have a religious agenda as he was that the leader of a secular superpower would.

There's balance, and then there's naivete.

One of these groups of religious fanatics has its finger on the button of an immense nuclear arsenal capable of rendering the biosphere uninhabitable for thousands of years. The other group hijacks airplanes and blows up discotechs. Which one merits the greater share of incredulity?

Or is it all the same to you?

29. Yes, it is the same.
Because one can incite the other. BTW, the nuclear weapons have not been used, so that's only theoretical. Whereas on the other hand, the other group has already demonstrated it's willingness to blow up discos and hijack airplanes. Ask the 9-11 families or any Israeli.

44. Nuclear weapons have not been used?
You've got a big chunk of history to explain, then.

Ask the "downwinders" and the "atomic veterans" about the effects of the "harmless" doses of radiation to which they were exposed.

And which country produces and uses depleted uranium in its armor piercing weapons? There's DU all over the Iraqi and Yugoslavian countryside now, doing wonders for the groundwater.

But that's rather immaterial to the larger picture. An Armageddonist president who has reportedly commented on the historical legacy of his leadership by remarking, "History. We don't know. We'll all be dead," is definitely a new and improved kind of threat to global safety. If you think that's literally the same sort of phenomenon as the terrorist attacks that have plagued the middle east for decades, then I pity your lack of perspective.

are you calling bush a Christian radical? I mean we recognize when someone from an area of the planet that we aren't familiar with says things like "god (Allah, Jehovah,) is on our side", or "it is the will of god (Allah, Jehovah) that we defeat the infidels", that the person making the statement is not a person interested in peace and discourse with the rest of the world.

So I agree...Shrub speaks on the same radical level that the "evildoers" do.

37. Does he do many interviews with
Islamic radicals? I don't watch TV much so I don't know how often these interviews occur. What sort of reaction do you normally see when an Islamic radical that he's interviewing makes a similar statement?

And yes, I do find a statement like that coming from the U.S. President to be a bit more shocking than one coming from an Islamic radical, you sort of expect it from them, while it's unexpected coming from an American President. I guess I just have slightly higher standards and expectations for American elected officials than I do for Islamic radicals, although that may be a mistake.

30. The thing about the Chinese "Mandate of Heaven"
is that it can be withdrawn when a ruler isn't benevolent and wise. Thus the fall of dynasties (at least, this is the way the historians of the next dynasty explain it).

Unfortunately, loss of the "Mandate" was usually accompanied by, if not accomplished by, revolution, war, chaos and sometimes invasion.

Hard to know how far that Chinese pundit meant to take the analogy. But I don't find it odd at all...

33. It may play well in some pockets or even regions of the US
But I believe that most Americans who possess profound religious faith have not surrendered their powers of rational judgement, and will be disturbed by the idea of a guy who won't go to experienced and knowledgeable men for advice on matters as grave as war, but just listens to God -- who apparently and coincidentally tells George W exactly what he (or Cheney or Wolfowitz) wants him to hear.

This ain't going to play well nationally. Bush is either getting crazier by the day, or else is getting bad advice about reaching out to the undecided.

28. ScarletWoman made a post here:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x1432949#1433130

in which she mentions that Woodward was former Navy Intelligence and that he was part of a big group that wanted Nixon out. I'd never heard that before but it makes sense. It makes sense in the way "Deep Throat" sought Woodward & Bernstein out and trusted them.

If this in fact the case, and that "He is a lot more than a journalist. He is obviously a very powerful man. Someone who is very well connected and who is doing what his superiors are telling him to do.", there's a whole other group of folks working to get rid of Bush that are NOT Democrats, liberals or anywhere on this side of the fence. They're looking out for the good of the country and that good means getting rid of Bush.

This adds a whole new light on the topic to me.

40. Woodward's possible CIA connections have often been cited
See, for example:

http://www.webcom.com/ctka/pr196-woodward.html
http://www.davidcogswell.com/MediaRoulette/WoodwardBush.html
http://truedemocracy.net/td2_1/19-MoreCensorship-1.html

There are further Washington Post/CIA connections from the Watergate period as well -- see http://www.namebase.org/davis.html for some particularly hair-raising examples. (Does the name "James Angleton" ring any bells?) The exposure of Watergate was far from being the simple exercise in democracy we've been led to believe it was.

Woodward is a CIA plant. If HE wants Bush out, that means there is a concerted effort on the part of the Intelligence Community that is offended by the OSP and Bush's PNAC shenanigans to usurp the boyking's cabal. Woodward's their press/propaganda wing commander.

This might get pretty interesting.

Palast knows too much and can make too many connections to the world powers that be.

Harris has the issue they don't want to investigate- Bush can go down, they must, however, make sure that people don't control the vote.

Clean up the elections and the power equation begins to change.

Voting is the big, "Don't look here," issue.

send the sun to shine on me the next morning to prove it. Of, course, 'god' was in Camarillo State Hospital in California where I was doing a tour with my psych class.

Still, he was a rather intriguing chap. Funny, I didn't notice he had any interest in politics. Seemed more involved with his big push broom and catching rays of sunlight with his left hand than in talking to any spoiled rich kid who was, at that point in time, AWOL from TANG.

But 'god' was very concerned with the birds outside his steel mesh reinforced windows. He spoke eloquently about the importance of safeguarding the environment. And he reminded me, before I left, that he liked me. And, damned if the sun didn't shine on me the very next morning, just like he promised.

Wonder if that man is still in that hospital. Maybe someone should consider running him for office?

56. the whole atmosphere of that interview was creepy...
both Mike Wallace and Bob Woodward did not look very comfortable at all. It's not only just what they said but HOW they said it that was so disturbing. I feel that they haven't said quite everything yet and that there is a lot more to come.

59. Wish I'd seen it!
I turned 60 Minutes on late as it was then a storm front went through with tornado warnings, so most of that interview was preempted by the weather guy. :(

Mike Wallace has been around a zillion years and has pretty much heard it all. For him to be shocked by this is telling, to me.
