John Dean Interview on C-Span is better than Woodward...anyone watch it?
Edited on Sun Apr-18-04 09:01 PM by KoKo01
He's exposing more about Chimp and giving alot more insight into the characters and the people...and that Cheney is the "Co-President."

Says Chimp is the only "member of his fraternity class who memorized everyone's name!" (Is Dean saying that memory is a key to intelligence, here..???)

Anyway, Dean is more hard edged about the failures of this Administration than Woodward was, imho. Woodward seem to be apologizing for the Chimp and making us want to have sympathy for his failings.

Dean is going for the "Gut" of these folks. Much more "in depth" psychological/thoughtful profile about how these guys work and what they are hiding based on legal views and experience. Getting into how Cheney runs the Chimp and how "secrecy" is ruining the administration because they hide everything, and what they are doing seems to be worse than Nixon!

IMHO, Woodward is just being his CIA/Insider self defending the Chimp but throwing us a "shocker" to get us to buy the whole book?

I give the  to Dean and would buy his book over Woody's...just mho...

Did you tape this one, by any chance?

If not, can you give some more sense of what transpired, please?

Thanks!

Kanary

7. My thoughts on the book
It is stupendous. It brings up some issues I was unaware of, particularly the part about how Bush's determination on the Iraq authorization was "spurious" as Dean put it. It's written persuasively and the factual claims are painstakingly documented. It has a great index too. I'm hoping a lot of fence-sitters take up the book and read it.

I do think it would have been a better argument had Dean waited until he had started to present his case before he started using language like "dissembling" and "lying". Also, there were a few places where the argument being made is a stretch - like questioning the difference in the numbers cited by Powell and Bush on alleged Iraqi anthrax stockpiles - Bush* said "more than 25,000 tons" Powell said "about 26,000 tons" - they said the same thing citing different numbers - they did not contradict each other.

3. I watched most of it, and I'm almost done reading his book
The great thing about the interview was that the audience got to ask questions, and did ask some good ones.

John Dean comes across much more credible than Woodward (not to say that Woodward is not). The other GREAT thing about Dean's book is that he has references on almost everything that you can check yourself for proof.

I also doesn't hurt that there are still a lot of people around who remember when he testified before Congress in the Watergate Hearings.

It's a great book BTW.

4. Best quote
I didn't see the whole interview, but I loved the part where he said that bush isn't taking the terror out of terrorism, he was putting it in (or words to that effect). In other words, he is trying to keep us fearful.

6. Yes...the questions are great...intelligent and his answers are "Legal"
And he really seems sincere whereas I didn't get where "Woodward" was coming from. I think Dean is really trying to tells us: "I've seen this before...lived through it, and spent time in jail...I was a whistle blower and a chief legal counsel to a corrupt President! Listen to me, Please!" (paraphrase of what I hear from him)

9. my favorite quote from book
Speaking of the WH's claim that it has a right to secrecy to ensure "unfettered council":

"Show me a person who does not want his advice to a president made public and I will show you someone who is giving that president information that is not in the public interest." p179

10. should be required reading
for everyone in America . John Dean's "Worse than Watergate". It's brief, full of facts and the law, and is an indictment of this administration. If nothing else, buy it to keep it at #1 and condemn Hannity's crap to the toilet. ;)

that God told him to remake the world using the US Military.

All based on documented interview w Bush and White House Insiders, and he has the tapes and transcripts.

13. And...he said Bush and Cheney not vetted by FBI ..wouldn't have passed and
that Cheney has two BIG potential problems with Halliburton and Energy dealings. One is selling stock before he bought Dresser Industries (Asbestos Problems) where he sold his stock at high price and then when he bought Dresser the stock went down because Wall St. knew the "liabilty claims would be coming" and the other was something to be revealed in his "Energy Conference" that the Supremes are going to rule on this month, I believe.

Not stuff we DU'ers didn't know...but that the average folks out there don't.
