2. not so much that
As it does a willingness to feed their own egos and read themselves (even anonymously) in a major book.

3. It's all about sensationalism
We don't have "news" anymore; we have gossip. It's getting coverage now because the sheeple are almost always interested in a scandal (except, apparently, immediately after a tragic event).

4. I see it as spoon feeding the public and letting them digest
what they are hearing until critical mass can be reached.

Of course, the republicans are much better at making accusatory statements. However, overall, the ranks are silent so far as to Woodward's non credibility.

5. Maybe they want to hurry the sinking along a bit
Federal employees in general are talking a whole lot more than usual to the press these days, but most often anonymously or on background. Also providing draft documents to journalists.

Of course this observation does not extend to political appointees, but there are plenty of career employees that may have given information to Woodward.

There no doubt were a number of political appointees among those who spoke with Woodward, and my guess is that they were not trying to undermine Bush, but they may have done so without realizing it.

My two cents.
