Lordy, check out what the Dallas Morning (Whoring) news has to say |
|
<snip> And fewer Americans rely on traditional news media for political news. Pew found that more of us, especially young adults, are turning to the Internet for political news and – heaven help us – to political comedy programs. Naturally, those who get campaign information from The Daily Show prove to be poorly informed. An increasing number of us seem interested in learning political news only from media that tell us what we want to hear.
That's dangerous for the press and the people. What should be done?
It's time that we in the Fourth Estate admit that liberal media bias isn't a figment of Rush Limbaugh's imagination. Studies by the American Society of Newspaper Editors, the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Knight Foundation have shown that, on average, journalists are much more politically and culturally liberal and secular than their readers.

1. If there is a Liberal Media, why do we NEED to go to the Internet news |

sources?????
Pretty much undercuts that idea.

they trotted out that tired old "most reporters are liberals", as if reporters controlled the news. It's just mind-boggling.

3. hmmmm or....it could be that people no longer have any faith |
|
in the so-called 4th estate in the US due to shoddy reporting, the inability to ask tough questions, the rapid pace of media consolidation and of course the fact that the media simply laid down during the march to war and people are now starting to wonder why and if nearly 1000 American deaths coudl have been avoided if the friggin press had done their damned jobs.

We used to have the Dallas Times Herald. I miss that paper. :(

7. Well, I'd have to agree that more newspapers appear to have |
|
a more liberal slant. The problem with that statement is that it does not consider where most Americans get their news, TV. TV has more of a conservative slant. And radio has a VERY conservative slant. So on the whole, I'd say the news industry leans a good bit to the right.
As for The Daily Show, sure it's funny, but once you discount the obvious joke stories, it is very accurate. We're not talking SNL here. They make it funny, but the news is not made up.

29. The ones I read are neutral at best (worst?) |
|
Those would include the Tennessean (Nashville), NY Times, LA Times, Mercury News (San Jose) and, occasionally, Washington Post. Every once in a while, I will also read some other small, local papers. I purposefully do not read the NY Post or Washington Times, and I try to stay away from anything else owned by Rupert Murdoch.
Perhaps I'm not reading enough of them, and perhaps my selection includes those few who are farthest to the left, but in my experience, newspapers are more inclined to lean to the left. But then, maybe my perception is off due to the extreme rightward slant of TV and radio.

13. Satire and the Daily Show |
|
John Daily is Twain-esque, IMO.
He, I'm sure with the help of his entire production and writing staff, has renewed the tradition of biting political satire. Political satire helped bring down or at least force attention to be paid to some of the most corrupt organizations in this nation's history. Boss Tweed, if he were alive, could testify to this.
The sarcastic "heaven help us" comment about political comedy shows in this article merely shows an extreme ignorance of history. Political satire is not new and is not to be discounted. It is as a powerful and legitimate force in American politics.

20. Newspapers have liberal slant???!!! |
|
Are you friggin' kidding? How many newspapers do you read?
How many endorsed Shrub in 2000? That's liberal slant?
Newspapers do provide more factual information in their stories--hence the perceived liberalism. In reality the ownership and editorial staffs are predominantly conservative.

32. Technically none of the above are in the media |
|
When I think media, I think of people who are trained in the field and went to school for it. In your list, Medved, who is a scum bag no doubt, is the only one who probably went to college and studied journalism.
The rest are untrained former house painters and bug sprayers.

15. Yeah, so what jouralists are more liberal .... |
|
Of course, journalists are more liberal because they've been in the field at one time or another have covered a situation that showed the success of liberalism, especially tolerance and understanding. But, why do these studies ignore owners? Don't they think owners of newspapers have a way of shaping things? I bet a study of media owners would show a decidedly conservative bias.

I was in Lowe's several weeks ago, and they had a DMN stand up with a guy giving out free issues and trying to get people signed up for subscriptions.
I walked past him with my cart (and I was wearing my Smirking Chimp shirt that says "Proud member of the Vast Left-Wing Conspiracy")
The guy stopped me and wanted to know if I wanted a paper. Every once in awhile I'll work the NY Times crossword. He wanted to know how often I read the DMN.
"Once a month or so if it's laying around somewhere," I replied. His eyes practically bulged, and he said, appalled, "You don't get the weekly paper? Can I sign you up for a subscription?"
"No," I replied.
"Why not?" he said, still shocked that I would dare to refuse 'the important daily happenings of the world.'
"Read my shirt, and then ask yourself why I would want to read the bullshit that BELO cranks out calling it news. I have unbiased sources on the Web that give me better information. I'm going to use this to line my catbox."
Then I walked off, leaving him slackjawed. He didn't even know that my cat died last year.

There's no liberal bias in political reporting...who decides what gets on the air? The managers and executives who are well paid and want to keep the current system/media consolidation...so they have vested interests in seeing conservatives in power...
Doesn't matter who does the reporting, it's what gets reported

31. Well I live in the Dallas area |
|
And stopped taking the Dallas Morning News because it is so right winged. Their editorial board is nothing more than a republican commercial. I used to be able to get editorials published there but not any more. I am considered too radical for them. And I far from radical. The Daily Show rocks by the way! Jon Stewart for president!
