So John McCain is a hero of Al Franken? Thats what Al Said..... |
|
Edited on Mon Apr-19-04 12:10 PM by trumad
I'm reposting this thread because my last one was deleted because I had the audacity of showing John McCain co-holding a dildo with George Bush. Anyway... How can Franken so admire McCain if McCain is doing his damn best to get Bush re-elected.

McCain has pulled some really nasty shit here in AZ and I for one, would not consider anyone who went through what he did in Nam and came back and screwed the Navajo for generations to come with the uranuim crap, a hero.
I think he is a sham and one of the biggest hypocrits I've seen in awhile.

He wants a member of his party back. It just so happens that the Republican party has been highjacked by a bunch of war mongering lunatics. I'm sure deep down inside he wishes ANYONE was representing his party for President other than AWOL. In fact, I now believe the only reason he ran in 2000 was because he knew AWOL was an idiot.
I have a tremendous amount of respect for McCain.

Anyone who has been paying attention knows McCain's support for Bush is half hearted at best. One has to wonder if McCain would be really that upset if ShrubCo. goes down to defeat in Nov.

Not everything in life is about Kerry vs. Bush, ya know. No matter what you think of his politics, McCain is a war hero and a man that speaks his mind, and both qualities are admirable. It's a bit much to call him a personal hero sure, but hey, it's Franken's show.
Edit: I would also note similarly that Repugs should acknowledge and honor FDR's heroism, but they instead chose to piss on his legacy by trying to remove him from the dime. I think they're fucking scumbags for doing so.

McCain's loyalty. He's not the fucking scumbag that someone like Ben Nighthorse Campbell is. The ONLY reason he's supporting Bush is because of his loyalty to the party that got him elected. I wish someone like Zell Miller would follow McCain's lead...

John McCain is campaigning to get the worst President in my lifetime back into the oval office in 2004. How a guy like this could be a "Hero" to a liberal is beyond me. It's Liberals pretending that John McCain is a Moderate which he's not even close.

fall all over the place, not just in the liberal arena.
I think he maintains a constant effort to network with all types of people, not just liberals, and now we get to hear from them on his show. Franken's discussions with conservatives, the give and take, is a good tutorial on how to get along while airing differences.

or indeed:

|
I would say that he is a man of integrity. Perhaps that is why he is a hero to Al, he does not lie as easily as most of us breathe.
I do not agree with most of his positions, but at least he is not a weasel of the same ilk as many of the leaders of the republican party and propaganda machine.
I can at least respect him, though I wonder at his support for a regime that tried its level best to assassinate his character during the last "election" cycle.

he forced Navajo families here on the rez to live on land contaminated by uranium tailings...for those who wouldn't move he stopped them from repairing or buildingnew homes, they are not allowed to gather firewood from their land nor get water from their own wells. It is basically genocide.
I have seen with my own eyes the destruction, illness, sadness and depression caused all thanks to my state Senator John McCain.

he is a Republican. I have never understood people who can separate the personal and political and admire or even be ambivalent to Republicans. More power to them I guess, or maybe I am too angry for my own good, but a Republican war hero is still a Republican.

McCain switching parties or becoming Kerry's VP, I am reminded of the story of when he was a POW and was offered early release due to his father's military clout. He refused to accept unless all of his fellow prisoners were also released. I think he spent a couple more years imprisoned after he refused the offer.
That underscores at least two facts. He is a hero and he is loyal to the core. Therefore, he would never switch parties.
Though he may be obliged to campaign for * he also speaks out against war profiteering, insists that the military strategy in Iraq was flawed, and speaks highly of Kerry.
He also has one of the best senses of humor in the Senate. He is often self effacing. He would have made such a better Prez than *. . .but then again who wouldn't?

17. There was a reference in Franken's book |
|
to the fact that McCain met with some American (sorry, nowhere near the book right now) whose anti-war speeches were funneled into the POW camp McCain was stuck in; the guy apologized, McCain said "You had every right" and they became friends. That speaks to a man with some major character, imho. Was it Franklin that said the wise man can argue either side of the argument?
I think he's wrong on Bush as well, and that his loyalty is especially baffling considering what Rove did to him here in SC as well as other places. But I can get why Al finds him heroic. I do too. He'd have had my vote last time if things had been different.

28. We have to find our way back to the point |
|
where people in politics can like and admire each other without agreeing about everything, or even about anything. If politics is nothing but us vs. them, do unto others before they do unto you, then the basis of democracy is undermined, things fall apart, the center cannot hold. A basic respect of the majority for the minority is necessary to the willingness of the minority to let the majority decide. Gingrich in the House and Scaife and the other Arkansas Project goons started us down this fratricidal road, and the 2000 selection and the invasion of Iraq put it over the top. We need to backtrack our way down from here, before Republicans vs. Democrats starts to equal Sunnis vs. Shiites or Israelis vs. Palestinians.

30. This shows how far we have fallen |
|
There used to be a time when we had two political parties that disagreed on issues and had nasty elections, but could still respect each other.
McCain has given more to this country than probably everyone who has posted to this thread combined. Like was said above, he could have been released early but refused to be a political pawn.
Now, I don't agree with him on a lot of issues, and I certainly don't agree with him that we should re-elect Bush. But I think he is loyal and honest. And I believe he thinks for himself. I wish every politician had those traits ... in both parties.

31. McCain is a statesman and a patriot, and one of the best (R)s in politics |
|
Just because we disagree doesn't mean I don't profoundly respect his integrity and honesty.
I disagree with him on most if not all political points, yet still respect him profoundly.
I admire John Mckain too, he has been through a lot in his life and remains committed to principle. I may disagree with some things, but at least I know where McCain stands. He's frequently shown a willingness to discuss intelligently positions with those who disagree, and he has also stood up and publicly admitted his wrongs more than once.
I don't want a country where only Democrats exist. I'm glad that there are people who see things differently. What I want is a country where Conservative people demonstrate the kind of honesty and integrity that McCain shows.

McCain stinks. Why does Franken play up to him? A question I have for this board. Last night we receive a scathing report on 60 minutes about junior's behavior and past deeds. Where are the outrages today? It appears that a thread about young girls and abortions without parental consent and having more gun freedom is more important
I listened to Franken today and was turned off completely. But I won't give up on the show yet, I'm just having a bad day, because I expected more from our Democratic leaders and folks at this board.

He said it was an "act of cowardice" to remain silent on the issue while campaigning in SC. How often have you heard a politician--of either party--admit to an "act of cowardice?"
Yes, he's a Republican. He has different views on many issues. However, he (along with fellow 'Nam vet Chuck Hagel) doesn't walk in lock-step with the current neocon GOP. He would be a ludicrous choice for veep, however.

38. Here is something else about Al Franken (it is hearsay, granted) |
|
back during the primary season, my democratic party group had representatives from Wesley Clark's campaign come to speak.
During the Q&A, someone asked about Clark's favorable comments on Bush.
One of the speakers said, among other things, that he attended a social function in NY where Franken was present shortly after the Patriot Act was voted in. He bumped into Franken in the restroom and asked Franken what he thought of everything going on, to which Franken replied, "I think we have the best man for the job now."
Like I said, hearsay.
