He was a Marine
This is a story from the local paper about an Marine from my hometown who died recently in Iraq. It has a lot of details and whatnot but I thought there might be a little some of y'all might find interesting, sad, worth reading, etc. particularly the interview with his mother at the end. Sad stuff; this is the first person I've actually known who has died in Iraq. He was the class behind me in school, and was a pretty nice guy from the little bit I knew of him. Actually kind of a geek when I knew him, but I mean that in the good sense; I was surprised he had become a Marine. In fact, I didn't find out he was one until I heard news of his death.

He was a Marine
by Kevin J. Dwyer, The Enterprise

ORANGE - A dozen police cars' flashing lights in the distance heralded Lance Cpl. Shane Goldman's homecoming to Orange County.

-snip-

As for the conflict that cost her son's life, Manshack said there is no doubt in her mind that he was proud of his service, but she will keep praying for all the sons and daughters serving in Iraq.

"I wish it would stop, but not in the way that things still are over there," she said. "I wish it would stop in a way that is settled. I'm one of those people who believe that if we don't take care of it there, then we will have to over here."

But was her son's sacrifice worth it? After a long pause, she quietly answered, "Not to me."

Yeah, they only send the kids of other people to war.
All those who were so supportive of that war, who mostly didn't serve, mostly didn't see their own kid go to join this war.
For them the "sacrifice" might have been worth it. But for those who lost loved ones, on both sides, I'm sure that for many of them, it wasn't worth it.

I'm kind of sick when I hear people saying, safely on their couch, that all the loss of human lifes was it worth it. Who are they to judge that? The majority of them didn't lose anybody in that war. Would they say the same if they had been the ones who lost their father/mother or children? Would they give their own child just to get rid of Saddam? Or their own life? I doubt that, it's only empty rhetoric.
