Did anyone catch Colin Powell on MSNBC about 30 minutes ago? |
|
I was in the car listening to the radio, and the host said Powell was on disputing Woodward's book.
How did Woodward come by his information anyway?
Does he have interview tapes, notes, or what?
Background information?
Informants?

1. I read somewhere that he has tapes. He'll need them |
|
But liars lie all the time. I just can't believe anything anyone in this administration says.

|
It's been well know that he has been at odds with the hawks in the administration.

3. In the 60 Mins interview they said they'd listened to the tapes |
|
and confirmed that Woodwards book was quoting unarmed (in-the-know) sources accurately.

4. Didn't Mike Wallace say 60 Minutes reviewed the tapes? |
|
60 Minutes claimed that they had reviewed Woodward's primary material before airing the interview. They also invited representatives from the White House to answer his account next week. It will be interesting to see if they take them up on it or just counterspin on safe forums like Hannity and MSNBC.
Woodward is an extremely careful reporter, careful to the point of mindless.

5. here is what is on the 60 minutes site, |
|
(CBS) Journalist Bob Woodward calls his new book, “Plan of Attack,” the first detailed, behind-the-scenes account of how and why the president decided to wage war in Iraq.
It’s an insider’s account written after Woodward spoke with 75 of the key decision makers, including President Bush himself.
The president permitted Woodward to quote him directly. Others spoke on the condition that Woodward not identify them as sources.
Woodward discusses the secret details of the White House's plans to attack Iraq for the first time on television with Correspondent Mike Wallace.
Woodward permitted 60 Minutes to listen to tapes he recorded of his most important interviews, to read the transcripts, and to verify that the quotes he uses are based on recollections from participants in the key meetings.

6. Woodward is old school |
|
I don't know that he hasn't gotten sloppy over the years, but at the time of Watergate he was pretty examplary in his reportage. I would be very surprised if there's ANYTHING in print with his name on it for which he can't provide solid backup.

The spin is that Powell WAS told about the "plans" to invade Iraq before Prince Bandar. What they (the repug spinners) are NOT talking about is whether or not, no matter when Bander received his briefing, was he (a foreign national) was shown a top secret NOFORN document.
Also, there should be careful attention paid to what language is used. Powell says that he was well aware of the "plans" to invade... Bandar received a detailed briefing, including the plan of attack with maps. So... it all depends on what the word "plan" means.
Sorry this took so long to type, I just listened to Schneider on CNN explain the poll results... and I'm so mad that I can't type...

9. I agree, the bush admin and Powell are parsing their responses... |
|
the question is not whether Powell was "aware" of the war plans, the question is: Was Bandar shown the detailed plans before Powell and why was Bandar shown plans that were clearly not to be shown to foreigners. They have not answered those!

Powell's problem is that he keeps insisting that he's a good soldier, and someone needs to tell him that he's not a soldier anymore.
He's the Secretary of State, the State Department is responsible for advising the President on foreign policy, and if that means disagreeing with the Vice President, or the NSA, then that's what he should be doing.
All Powell has done is nodded yes to everything, just like those bobble head dogs you see in cars.
And so far no one has come out and said that Woodward is lying, they just keep disputing what he has written. What makes little sense is that the WH got the book before it was published, and didn't do or say anything about what was written.

14. I don't give ONE goddamn about ANYTHING in that book, except |
|
the FACT that they STOLE $700 MILLION from the pursuit of AlQaeda, and used it to start the ball rolling for the Iraq invasion
as John Dean said, with surprise that it hadn't been reported in the media anywhere, they wrote a LAW SPECIFICALLY to keep this from happening after Nixon kept pulling that shit during Vietnam
he also said that this should have been a MAJOR scandal...a felony was committed, an impeachable offense....but quoted a serious scholar, who's studied the mechanics of scandal, apparently, and has determined......duhhhh....that the major ingredient of any scandal is how the media treats it, especially at its inception.
no kiddin.....tree falls in the woods, etc.
once again, as Dean says in his book, and said on CSPAN, the media has completely abrogated its responsibility
wonder what sort of play this story will get
this has been discussed here, I know, but I don't even see a current thread on it. What's the DEAL?

18. Colin was asked to drive the getaway car and he did. Now he's in it too. |
|
Powell wanted them to actually use the State Department he's been allowed to pretend to run that our taxes are paying for.
But President Cheney didn't want to and had his spokes-model, George, talk their house servant, Colin, into driving them to the robbery.
They've all gotten caught and Powell will once again defend the power structure he's risen to visibility (not power) on.

Standard Operating Procedure for Bush & Co. Deny, deny, deny. They operate on the theory that what the US hears from the White House first is the thing they end up believing. As a result, they make all these public denials and then, finally, admit that there was at least some truth in whatever they've denied their butts off about.

17. I was at the farm over the weekend |
|
some cows got out and were in the driveway. When Tom was trying to herd them back into the field, two of them decided to check out Tibet, the old Himalayan cat, who was sleeping next to the fence. That poor old cat was hissing and spitting - she was beside herself. I swear those cows almost licked her. Tom had to go rescue the poor thang. It was freaking hilarious. :D
