Log Cabin Republicans still mostly support Bush
At the beginning of the Log Cabin Republican convention this weekend in Palm Springs, California, the country's largest gay Republican group keeps asking itself where its priorities lie. Should the members support the Republican party in all of its incarnations, or are they there to support specifically gay issues? In light of President Bush's support for the constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages, many of the conventioners still say they support him, even if they are injured by the proposed amendment. Andrew Sullivan, one of the speakers, still criticized the president, saying, "It’s about treating people equally. That’s what (being conservative) is all about."

5. So let them help commit their own murder.
Don't expect me to help them one bit.

WTF "That's what (being conservative) is about"?! WTF?! I thought they were the party of 'fiscal responsibility', another outrageous unsubstantiated MYTH that the idiots of the world quickly believe.

I'm sick of the shit.

Maybe Bush* will go after the LCRs first. Make examples out of them. Seems fair, for THAT is what conservativism is all about: "I'll Break your leg then say 'lean on me'" is their credo.

9. "the country's largest gay Republican group"
Are there others? Seriously, I don't know.

Also, does the Republican Party welcome them with open arms? For instance, do they get to speak at the Convention?

15. Unbelievable
Real conservatives don't support Bush - the most fiscally profligate president even by the lax standards set during the borrow-till-you-drop Reagan years. But if not conservatism in a Smithian sense, why would any member of the gay community support an administration that not only wants to limit gays' standing in society but is also completely homophobic on a personal level?

Sullivan and his ilk should go check out FR whenever a story like this comes up. See how they feel about their sexuality being attacked as a "sad mental condition" at best, an "abomination" usually.

The mind boggles. I classify the Log Cabin folks in the same DSM category as the working class folks that support repug politicians - complete masochists!

22. but greed/self interest doesn't work for this either
Gay marriage is in many ways coming to head now because it's a financial necessity. The economy is such that the chance of both adults in a relationship having a job that is secure and offers health insurance is fairly nil. This is why people of my generation, who formerly had no interest in marriage, are suddenly realizing that they do need it if they are not to be destroyed financially in middle age when the odds of having a serious illness increase substantially. I'm not seeing what a self-interested, money-seeking gay individual would get out of being Republican. Think about it. If the partner who has the lesser job or who can't get a job with benefits becomes ill, what are your choices? To dump your partner or to lose everything you've both worked for financially because health care is so outrageously priced to the un-insured?

One reason libertarianism doesn't work is because people don't (and sometimes can't) know their own self-interest. But, in the case of this particular issue, it's pretty clear that the greater financial benefit comes with supporting marriage for all who want it.

I dunno, I'm coming to the conclusion that a lot of Log Cabin Republicans are just plain not-too-bright. There is no law of nature that says all gay men are Leonardo da Vinci.

29. Its not always easy
which is fine, but why on earth would you vote to keep it that way or to make it worse? I cannot understand anyone being part of the LCR. If I found out a guy I was dating was part of that I would dump him. I just couldn't respect someone part of that group.

I am asking, because I have been reading over the last few days from some very realiable sources, that the LCR is actually ready to turn their backs on Bush*, and may not be endorsing him later this year for election.

28. come on...
I think it's unfair to consider gay republicans to be bigger idiots than any other republican. The bottom line is that all republicans are idiots. Republican policies are not just anti-gay but anti-humanity.

I wonder though how many of these log cabin republicans are military men? The only gay republican I've ever known was in the navy and in the closet which is the only type of gay republican I can imagine.

38. I agree with the log cabins
You know they are shunned by their own party. People start praying for them when they come around. Their donations are given back. Yet they stick with the party, and that shows courage. Let them stick with the republican party and not have it over run by the Christian Nuts. You know if you are a true conservative or a true liberal, you have many things to agree on. It's when the Christian Nuts and the Corporate Whores take over that we start having problems.
