Poll question: Should the United Nations have a military? |
|
Edited on Tue Apr-20-04 01:46 AM by leftyandproud
I really think we need to give the UN some teeth...not only to back up their resolutions, but to deter outlaw regimes like * from starting illegal pre-emptive wars. I think the world showing a united front...the willingness to stand on principle and prevent wars of aggression will send a powerful message to all Americans. I think something like this will be able to PREVENT unnecessary conflict, get Americans on our side, and lead to peaceful solutions in nearly all future cases. What do you think?
Should we give the United Nations some teeth by creating a cooperative multinational military force?
If not, why not?

1. Who is going to fund it? |
|
Last I checked, the UN lacks the authority to levy compulsory taxes; this is one of the worst problems the US had under the Articles of Confederation...
Don't say US, because * would never fund it. He would probably declare war on the UN and destroy it before it could raise an army.

The US is the most inappropriate nation in the world to act as a fair policeman and judge. Face it, every country only mostly cares for itself and it can hardly be depended upon to act fairly when its own interests are involved. You only need to look at the repressed in Palestine to know it is so. They have no power to bring to the negotiating table to be on equal terms with the Israelis and they're just being pushed around as dispensable political pawns by the US. They have nothing to make the world sit up and pay attention except for their suicide bombers and they can make headlines, misery, death for the people and headaches for the politicians but hardly enough to drive the Israelis to compromise. We definitely need a impartial power like the UN only that the UN is without power. And without power, you can't so much as demand fairness. This is the lesson that we can all learn, courtesy of the neocons. So I don't think that's the solution. One solution is probably a bi or multipolar world where there's another power pole. But of course, history and experience has shown that it can also create different problems and maybe even make the world a more dangerous place. In an impossible utopian world of course, we all live in peace and disputes are arbitrated by the UN but given recent events and the direction this superpower is going, I think it's gonna be a very very distant dream...
