The Bible vs BushCo
Our fundy friends in the White House think they have the sole right to represent Christianity here in the US and abroad. Well I was reading through Proverbs and I found a few verses they might have missed:

Proverbs 14:7 - Go from the presence of a foolish man, when thou preceivist not in him the lips of knowledge.

Proverbs 14:31 - He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his maker: but he that honor him have mercy on the poor.

Proverbs 16:27-30 - An ungodly man diggeth up evil: and in his lips there is as a burning fire. A froward man soweth strife, and a whisperer seperatheth chief friends. A violent man enticeth his neighbor, and leadeth him into the way that is not good. He shutteth his eyes to devise froward things: moving his lips he bringeth evil to pass.

Proverbs 17:7 - Excellent speech becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince

Proverbs 17:21 - He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy.

Proverbs 18:11 - The rich man's wealth is his strong city, and as a high wall in his own conceit.

Proverbs 19:1 - Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips and is a fool.

Proverbs 19:6 - Many will intreat the favor of the prince: and every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts.

Proverbs 19:29 - Judgements are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the backs of fools.

Proverbs 21:17 - He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich

King Solomon was a wise man. Im sure he dealt with idiots like * all the time. I hope you all can take heart in the fact that what we are going through as a nation is nothing new. We just have to remain steadfast in our determination to help the less fortunate and to get this lying, slanderous fool out of office and into jail.

-Alec

p.s. Feel free to add your own. I only drew quotes from a few chapters of one book.

From the book of George, which is all about how the people threw the money-changers out of the White House!

3. And leave us not forget the big one, Jesus' summatiion of all the law
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your mind, and with all your strength; and love your neighbor as yourself."

and also, "For so as you have done to the least of these, you have done to me." (another saying of Jesus, in case anyone doesn't know - Jesus was telling the disciples and the people that every time they clothe or feed or show love to a hungry, naked, poor, etc. person, they are doing it to Jesus, and every time they deny to help, they are denying Jesus).

I:d go on with more, but Jesus also said, "Do not point out the specek in your brother's eye when there is a log in your own." and I don't want to be deemed a hypocrite (though the religious right would do well to adhere to that saying as well - you hear that all you "God hates fags" and "That man sinned" yellers?)

4. I like seeing religious quotes. One of the Republican tricks is to say...
you can't be a Christian and a Democrat at the same time. That myth needs to be debunked - big time!!!

5. OK, Let's Do It!!!
I think this is a great place to compile the biblical type of thought that runs exactly counter to the actions of this administration. And they're giving Christians, Jesus and God a BAD name!

I promise you, if people interpreted the Bible from a humanitarian viewpoint, there's no way they could back up their actions with scripture.

Let's brainstorm ways we can do that in an honest way that doesn't get obnoxious, impose on people of other religions/no religion, etc. And why limit it to Christianity? If you went through the Jewish, Christian & Muslim traditions and cited the parts commanding us to treat others fairly, it would cast a whole new light on things and show the commonality of people across the globe instead of one group being better than another.

Also, one thing that scares me is highly religious idealogues who have no sense of humor and no ability to look at themselves honestly.

6. OK, heres an idea
Im also very tired of certain people acting as though they had the sole claim to God's truth. Lets do our part to show America that progressiveness and spirituality are one and the same.

DU is a very diverse place. Im sure we could find a representative of each faith to post some provoking scripture, perhaps on a weekly basis? I would be willing to share some useful stuff from the Bible. Are there any Jews/Muslims/Buddhists/Snakehandlers that would also be willing to contribute? Dont be shy!

8. "God blesses those who work
Edited on Tue Apr-20-04 07:35 PM by devrc243
for peace," Matthew 5: 9

"Look out for one another's interests, not just your own."Philipians 2:4

"Do not use harmful words, but only helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed, so that what you say will do good to those who hear you." Ephesains 4:29

And this is my favorite:

"Do everything possible on your part to live in PEACE with everybody." Romans 12:18

9. i like this one
short & simple.

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. (#9)

i particularly love shooting this commandment back at fundies who send me email about how christian bush is & how unchristian clinton/kerry/democrats in general are.

if i really want to blow their minds, i tell them they're "9th Commandment-challenged" so they have to go look it up....

amazingly, my email box hasn't been quite as clogged up with this junk lately.....

10. More...
Jeremiah 14:14
Then the LORD said to me, "The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I have not sent them or appointed them or spoken to them. They are prophesying to you false visions, divinations, idolatries, and the delusions of their own minds."

Luke 12:15
Then he said to them, (the crowd) "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."

Matthew 23:15
"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are." (Sound like Bush proselytizing?)

11. 2 Corinthians 5:19
this is the way I remember learning it - checking on the internet I see it combines the King James and the RSV translations

'God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself....and he has entrusted us with the message of reconciliation'

emphasis from when I learned it is on RECONCILIATION
