Savannah man dies after Taser shock

His family says Melvin Samuel, 28, was in jail in Houston County because of an unpaid fine.

A Savannah man who was transferred to a Houston County jail died after being shocked with a Taser by guards, authorities said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the death of Melvin Samuel, 28, who was transported to the jail in Perry on Friday after being arrested on probation violation charges.

Samuel was "uncooperative since his arrival at the jail," said Gary Rothwell, special agent in charge of the Perry GBI office.

The Taser device was used to subdue Samuel shortly after 1 a.m. while he was being moved from a holding cell, Rothwell said. About 10 minutes after the struggle, guards noticed that Samuel was unresponsive and called for emergency medical personnel.

Rothwell said Samuel was taken to Perry Hospital
