3. Funny how they both came up with the same idea on the same day |

But while Darby is injecting a new character, Trudeau is throwing himself off a cliff by inflicting this storyline on one of his lead characters. Will these soliders troll for sympathy, try send us on a guilt trip for "not supporting" them, or become a mechanism for protesting the war? Suddenly, this feels more like a soap opera than a comic strip. We'll just have to stay tuned...

4. "Doonesbury" has always been soap opera-ish |
|
Not that it's a bad thing. The title character has gone from innocent college student to adventurer, from liberal to Anderson supporter to Republican to Anti-Bush... single, married, seperated, divorced, single dad, remarried to someone younger... And that's just Mike Doonesbury! Gary Trudeau has changed the characters over the years. B.D. (last name is just D) has been the star quarterback and ROTC, did a tour in 'Nam, drafted by the (then) Los Angeles Rams, failed as a quarterback, joined the California Highway Patrol, reactivated and sent to Iraq during Desert Storm (where he was also injured), returned stateside (back to the CHP), was offered the head coach job at the same school where he was once star quarterback, re-re-activated for Operation Iraqi Liberation... He's had people die of AIDS, of a heart attack while bird watching, after getting Alzhiemers... It's quite a strip, and has always been one of the best.

5. B.D went to 'Nam to avoid taking a test in college... |

I remember the incredulous look on Mike's face.
I know they're just ink on paper, but I got the same sick feeling when I learned about this as I do when I see photos of our amputatees going thru rehab.
Is this madness ever going to end?

6. Doonesbury is very multi-layered |
|
I grew up with it and have followed it ever since I was a kid. B.D. has always reminded me of my big brother, having played football.
I feel so sorry for B.D. But it does got to show Garry Trudeau always keeps it fresh and relevant.
