What was Gore thinking bringing Holy Joe on board?
Seriously? It seems like the dumbest decision ever.

He didn't really make even an electoral difference.

WTF the Gore thinking?

Anyone have some insight?

16. I doubt it. The blacks in Fl came turned out in record numbers....
The black voters carried the day for Gore in FL from what I have read. Anyway, I don't think Gore would have done any worse in Florida with Graham as his running mate. And, Graham may have helped him more in other states.

5. he was thinking "yes Master"
"I will do the DLC's bidding.. populism won't win, must have a 'centrist'... thy will be done Master.."

:puke:

Gore became 10 times the politician, and 10 times the man, when he split from the scene and started giving speeches. He's given some for MoveOn that bring one to tears.

7. I think it's the shared moral outlook.
Not many politicians are as straight-laced as Gore and Lieberman. But what Gore failed to see, I believe, is that Lieberman has a lot of morality but insufficient humanity.

8. Lieberman is extremely strong with the Jewish vote
and as such is absolutely essential to this campaign. And, yes Lieberman made a big electoral difference especially in FL and NY.

You need to look beyond their personal feelings toward a candidate and think about how to win an election.

17. I don't see it. Black voters turned out in record numbers for Gore..
Gore would have won NY without Lieberman. Graham could have helped just as much in FL, and helped in some other states. I think it was the boneheaded political move of all times.

12. Political Move?
LBJ wasn't popular in the Kennedy camp.

Look at the arguments now for Edwards as VP, to try to bring in southern votes.

It's not always who THEY'D chose if other factors were not in play.

13. I think he got bad advice.
Edited on Tue Apr-20-04 12:04 PM by Cleita
I'm going out on a limb here. Why did Joe also run for the Senate at the same time? What were the kissy face debates with Cheney about? Was he afraid of offending the future VP? Could he have known that Bush was going to be selected President one way or the other?

18. Al seemed to be hampered by advisors
the entire campaign. There was this constant stress between Gore wanting to strike out on his own and holding to the DLC line. He accepted Joe as part of that DLC win the middle tactic. Follow the people and you cannot lead them.

19. Possibly answering Rove
Edited on Tue Apr-20-04 12:54 PM by iorg
Lieberman is a decent guy that could have represented all Americans, Rove had to use GOP speak to say that his pick was the same

July 29, 2000

http://www.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0007/29/smn.03.html

HARRIS: There are some people who are crying or casting aspersions on that, that is that assertion, because of this selection of Dick Cheney and now the information coming out about his voting record. How do you answer those critics?

ROVE: Well, look, Dick Cheney is, Governor Bush said I want to pick somebody who could be President of the United States. Dick Cheney has served our country tremendously as Secretary of Defense during the Gulf War, as a member of Congress, as the youngest chief of staff for a President of the United States in history. This man is a great pick. He raises the bar for Al Gore. Al Gore now has to have somebody that the American people can look at and say, just like they look at Dick Cheney, and say that person could be president.
