be the best thing that could happen. Especially if there is a special provision, no outs for rich kids! Equal opportunity employment period. Then and only then will what is happening begin to change for the better.
Let the kids of the people who are running this war be on the FRONT LINE! Including the "twins". Does anyone here think Laura would ever stand for that? Or any of our other "righteous", Bible thumping Rethuglicans? Let's let the Kerry kids go as well.
Sorry I keep saying this, "Americans" have to feel more pain, before they will every start to care. Take away their weekend obsession with every sport there is, take away their cable and then we will have an engaged citizenry.

18. I meant what I said, please "no wrath". I do not and have not ever |

supported what this administration or prior administrations have done. I am very active on a daily basis in making it stop. Barbaraann, they are running out of volunteers. The draft is inevitable. The sooner the draft comes, the sooner the people of this nation may choose to wage peace instead of war. Choose to dismantle the military-industrial complex and make a real honest-to-god difference in this world.
I do not want a draft. I do not want war. I have a daughter that is going to be 16 on May 5. She wants to be a doctor, with the training and education she is getting now, she will be front and center before she ever gets the chance to go to college. Worse than that my ex, who she lives, with loves the military and is a macho idiot. I've been trying to get her to understand my position for over a year now. I embarrass her with my politics and my activism.

16. My kids are "rich kids," and we're not "running the war." |
|
I have money but no connections. I'm not involved in running or profiting from the war. In fact, I oppose it with every fiber of my being, to cite a cliched phrase.
I hope my children will not be caught in this web of deceit.

19. I do not know what your definition of rich is......... |
|
Edited on Tue Apr-20-04 07:29 PM by anarchy1999
My definition is start with the top 1% and then shift down to top 5%, then 10%. I am willing to bet you might be surprised at where you find yourself and your family. What is your definition of "rich'?
Better qualification would be "wealthy elite".

6. Hagel and Lugar are calling Bush out on the carpet.. |
|
I liked what he said about congress not serving "under the President" but, according to the constitution WITH the President. Quite strong language coming from a republican senator.
Go Hagel!

7. It's long past time for Universal National Service. |
|
Edited on Tue Apr-20-04 05:58 PM by TahitiNut
Everyone. Male, female, gay, straight, with any level of ability. Everyfuckingone! Eighteen months (Army: 6 months of training + 12 months in combat zone) minimum. Choice of various service types with longer service obligations (park service, public health service, Peace Corps, VISTA, etc.).
Non-military options would include working on public resources or infrastructure or caring for the disabled and elderly. Fuck "privatization" and the profits to the wealthy that merely rob the poor to pay the rich!

Military options would mean shorter service. Terms of service could be varied according to (reverse) "market" demands.
On edit: Besides, once everyone participated, you can bet your bippy that we'd think longer and harder about having a military that's bigger than the next twenty-five nation's militaries combined. Right now, far too many "Americans" seem to think their only "involvement" in their nation is their tax bill. That's total crap and much of what's led to having this detestible cabal in DC.

14. I think most follks would be surpirsed how quickly people ... |

... became more "liberal." I see a very strong correlation between the universality of military service and the resulting 'liberal' political ideology of the country. I detested the notion of a "professional military" from the beginning, despite the fact I was a Vietnam draftee. Ever since the military became "volunteer" this country has lurched and stumbled to the extreme fascist right.

Thank you. My aging uncle mentioned something to me just the other day that he had to serve in the '50's, he had no choice. It may have had something to do with college, but I do not think so. He told me it was mandatory 2 years. Know anything about that?

8. "Generational War"..... Hagel refered to this.... |
|
We need more troops to fight the "generational war". I am not sure if he meant the war on terror or the Iraq war or if he meant they are one and the same. Anyone else notice it?

and the draft scares the living crap out of me. There is no way I will be dying or even serving for that matter for oil. We're not fighting for freedom. I'd be glad to serve my country if it was a just cause BUT this is NOT a cause for my blood to be shed.
