First, thanks to trumad for posting this snipped photo of Kerry's request for duty in Vietnam. One particularly striking thing about the request is its date: February 10, 1968. As most of us know, February 10, 1968 came at the height of the Tet Offensive, which had begun a little less than two weeks early. The ground combat throughout the month of February was intense, and on February 10, the Citadel at Hue was still occupied by PAVN troops, with Marines fighting and dying in numbers in vicious street battles. Significant fighting was still going on all over the country, from I Corps (where the Marines were settling into the siege of Khe Sanh), through the Central Highlands and coastal region, and down into the Delta. While the initial NLF push had been staunched in Saigon, fighting still raged in Cholon and Gia Dinh, and the city was far from secure.
In the midst of the chaos of the Tet Offensive, Kerry
requests to be sent into the country? At the worst moment of the fighting, Kerry requests to be thrown to the "front"? I just wanted to lay out the situation here, since I haven't seen the significance of the date mentioned on the news or anywhere else. It is important to understand context here, and I think it tells us something about Kerry's character.
