Using congressional prime time to attack the opposing party's candidate. It's like watching FoxNews from the floor of the legislature!

one minutes have been going on for as long as i can remember but i thought there was a rule against mentioning any member of the senate by name in a disparaging manner?

|
said it was okay if the Senator was presidential nominee. Then the Dem said Kerry is NOT the nominee. Then the Speaker called on someone else.

Wasting time ON THE FLOOR OF CONGRESS campaigning to re-select thier candidate. If a Democrat had done it, it would be all over every news channel and he would be censured (and rightfully so). But Reps don't care.

31. huh? what accusation? |
|
Edited on Thu Apr-22-04 02:51 PM by bearfartinthewoods
i didn't accuse her of anything!
maybe you are confused as to the meaning of scathing?
1 : to do harm to; specifically : SCORCH, SEAR 2 : to assail with withering denunciation
Cynthia was dynamite. can you think of a better way to describe her style and effectiveness?
ON EDIT: i see what you were looking at. I wasn't responding to the treason bit but to the idea of 'wasting time on the floor of the congress' with the one minutes. Both sides do it and Cybthia was a pro. She never "wasted" her minute.

32. The question was not about treason or just using up time |
|
It was about mentioning a US Senator in a derogatory manner. That is what was being addressed. They came back and said Kerry was the Democratic nominee so was fair game. It was mentioned he was not yet the nominee since the Democratic convention had not yet occurred so he was still to be considered as a US Senator. I was asking you to name one occurrence in which any Democrat bad mouthed a sitting US Senator from the floor of the house.

but i have no interest in trying to prove it. dems have lost their tempers already during debates so i won;t go so far as you have and say it's never happened. think of the time prior to lott getting the boot.
in any case, my post was dealing with the oddity of one minute speeches and how effective they can be.

18. rules don't allow attacks or naming senators |
|
i remember this when the democrats were on the floor and talking about how bush attacked mccain during the 2000 primary and they were told they can't bring up mccain's name because he is a senator. they were told they can talk about it without naming him.
right now, the republicans went one by one naming john kerry and attacking him. john lewis brought up the rules and they said kerry is the nominee for president and naming is allowed though not personal attacks, lewis said how he is NOT the nominee (he isn't official nominee until convention). and the idiot republican said there is no opinion on that. it seems for now they have shut up. and it's funny how they said naming kerry is allowed as long as it's not personal attacks when all of them had attacked him personally.

campaigning for RNC. That should be a lesson for decades to never let one party grab all branches of the government - especially the fascist party! They did it with the war, demonizing France, they did it with patriot Act/Gorelick - before of that to demonize Clinton. Some people cannot be entrusted with power - they'll misuse it.

Chimpy probably put them up to this. All it's done is lowered the bar for bad behavior in the Senate and given the Democrats an opportunity to respond.
The Chimp's war record vs. Kerry's war record? No comparison. The WH should have let that dog stay asleep.
Another example of how pitifully out-classed the WH election machine is in this campaign.

42. is there not a prohibition of house members attacking senators by name? |
|
it ws my understanding that neither congressmen or senators were allowed to speak critically by name of a member of the other body while speaking before their respective body.
their remarks critical of kerry, spoken from the floor of the house should be stricken from the records and they should be censured if they do it again.
the house ethics committee needs to take up this matter.
