Lady who took coffin photograph fired and her husband as well
SEATTLE (AP) A cargo worker whose photograph of flag-draped coffins bearing the remains of U.S. soldiers was published on a newspaper's front page was fired by the military contractor that employed her.

Tami Silicio, 50, was fired Wednesday by Maytag Aircraft Corp. after military officials raised ''very specific concerns'' related to the photograph, said William L. Silva, Maytag president. The photo was taken in Kuwait.

Silva declined to identify the Pentagon's concerns but said Silicio violated company and federal government rules. He declined to comment further.

Silicio said she hoped the photo of the 20 flag-draped coffins awaiting transport from Kuwait to the United States would show the relatives of soldiers killed in Iraq that civilian and military crews return the remains of their loved ones with care and devotion.

1. I'm beginning to understand that the battle against evil will require
thousands of these acts of personal sacrifices. Tami Silicio will be one of the unsung heros. One who gave up their livelihood in order to give the people the truth.

3. I think her motives were very noble. The families don't have any way of
knowing how their loved ones bodies are treated. I think the government should have guts to show them. I for one am very ashamed that we don't seem to want to see and honor those coming home. If you support this war then have the fucking balls to see what your support really means.

"violated...federal government rules"

how about raising a stink and firing those people who violate the minor federal rules regarding diverting finances to Iraq before Congress has authorized spending?@?!?!?

<on edit>

"the Pentagon bars news organizations from photographing caskets being returned to the United States, saying publication of such photos would be insensitive to bereaved families."

I find this ridiculous. How would this be insensitive? The caskets seemed perfectly well kept, drapped in American flags and tended to by crew members. I guess the Pentagon is expecting their sucesses in Iraq to begin producing so many dead that they will be returned in greater numbers and with less concern for the remains?

5. Pentagon bars what?
What I find curious is that the Pentagon supposedly has the authority to bar anyone from publishing anything. The fact that news organizations will publish a phrase like "Pentagon bars news organizations" from anything without even a hint of irony strikes me as utterly incompetent journalism in and of itself.

I wonder if someone is going to likewise claim the Pentagon can bar the memoryhole.org from publishing the photos it has.

I'm on the verge of blowing my next paycheck at Kinkos...

6. I am sorry she got fired but that will make it to the news.
And why. They were mad but it makes it a better story. Who is doing this stuff at the WH? It is like a Peter Seller's movie. They talk like Being There half the time at that.
