Bush vows to reverse wetlands losses
Bush vows to reverse wetlands losses

JOHN HEILPRIN, Associated Press Writer
Thursday, April 22, 2004

(04-22) 09:31 PDT WELLS, Maine (AP) --

President Bush, trying to shore up his environmental record against criticism from Democratic rival John Kerry, on Thursday called for restoring or protecting as many as 3 million acres of wetlands over the next five years.

"Instead of just limiting our losses, we will expand the wetlands of America," Bush said Thursday after touring a salt marsh accompanied by his mother, Barbara, on an overcast day.

Bush was celebrating Earth Day by highlighting efforts to help wetlands at a Maine nature reserve. He also was announcing new figures Thursday from the Agriculture Department that he says show that for the first time in the nation's history the annual net loss of wetlands on farmland has been reversed.

"Earth Day has become a great tradition in our country," Bush said. "It reminds us that we can't take the natural wonders for granted, that's what it says to me."

"Earth Day has become a great tradition in our country," Bush said. "It reminds us that we can't take the natural wonders for granted, that's what it says to me." I just don't know what to say. I have so many thoughts and I just can't get them into words right now. This man is just such an idiot!

1. Just go back to the White House, George.
And stop making blatantly ridiculous promises you have no intention of keeping.

That he even recognizes Earth Day is humorous
Given his record on that. It's like Kerry getting on national TV and espousing the glory of expensive haircuts.

4. Right
Is there anyone in America stupid enough to believe that Bush will do anything to help the environment? Anything anyone proposes is going to be opposed by a business group somewhere, and his business contributors are always going to come first.

9. Add it to the list!
We are going to the Moon!
We are going to find WMD's!
We are going to clean the air with voluntary polution controls!
Broadband for the masses!
We are going to provide a wider range of media choices by concentrating media within a few select corporations!
Change the tone!

The list goes on....

14. Like his brother Jeb...
he'll probably do it by declaring that wetlands pollute the environment and golf courses are better at filtering our water. Yup, that's what we're living with here in sunny Florida!

15. Was Barbara's beautiful mind bothered by the marsh?
"after touring a salt marsh accompanied by his mother, Barbara, on an overcast day."

How do you "tour" a salt marsh? You stop at the side of the road and say "Yup, that's a salt marsh alright", I think that would be the extent of any 'tour'.

16. He promised a new $300 million initiative today in Maine
Would anyone like to guess just exactly what will happen to this bold new environmental initiative when budget time rolls around?

Kind of like the African AIDS initiative, maybe?

Kind of like "fully funding" the national park system?

Kind of like funding (fill in broken Bush promise here)?
