America will not survive a second bush term, seriously
if the worst happens this fall, and they steal it again, they will not worry about re-election in a second term. they wouldn't have the yolk of giving a damn about what voters want, and unleash all hell on the union.

even as rightwing as they are, they are being cautious to keep the votes at about half and half, like last time, so the supreme court can call it. and then, they will do in the second term, what they dared not do in the first.

and i really don't think america will be the same. we must do everything we can to see that BOTH president bush's are one termers.

3. I agree
and even if he doesn't win, America's best days are long behind her. I think it is too late to stop the downhill slide no matter who gets in. :-(

4. I am afraid of this too
but on the other hand the republicans in the congress will have to pay the price for whatever happens. They are just as selfish as dumb gwb, and they will not risk their being elected again. They would have to be really stupid too .... oh dear. We will be in trouble.

5. Amen, mopaul.
America isn't the same as it was even four short years ago...but our only hope of getting back on the correct path is to get as many right-wingers out of office as possible, but most especially the Idiot-in-Chief.

6. I should start working on my exit strategy...
If Bush steals it in 2004, I'm seriously looking at relocating to Switzerland or Canada. Any other suggested destinations?

11. I'd say Ireland or New Zealand
I hate to indulge in pessimism but I tried my damnedest to be optimistic when Bush got "selected". . . ."well how much damage coul he do in four years. . .?"

He has summarily left me astounded regarding the way in which he has trashed every aspect of our country I've grown to know and love. This may be the fall of Rome redux.

Maybe superpowers are no longer appropriate for our still new millenium. Maybe by attempting to turn Iraq into Switzerland, we've turned our economy into that of Argentina. Maybe it really doesn't matter.

I just can't believe the absolute short sighted idiocy of this administration and it troubles me greatly.

18. I fear that our nation is running only on the momentum of the past ...
... and like the momentum of a spinning wheel, it tends to slow down unless extra energy is applied. We know our nation has lots of energy - capital, labor, brain-power. So, is that energy being applied to spin the wheel back up?

No.

It's being sent to India, eastern Europe, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, and a hundred other third-world nations as the "offshoring" boom continues. I don't begrudge the efforts of those nations - almost all "offshore" projects are heavily subsidized by state or national governments - they are doing what is best for their people. In the end, however, our nation loses its braintrust, its energy, and eventually its soul.

For the last year, as part of my work, I have managed an offshore software project for my company. The offshore developers I interact with (Indians) are basically decent people who have seen an opportunity and are making their money while they can. I have gotten to know them and they have told me that India expects be undercut, economically, by China within 10 years. All of the massive infrastructure built by the government in India to support "offshoring" will be eventually be nothing but vacant buildings and Indians will go "from Toyotas back to Mopeds" during that time. They are very blunt about this - they are getting their money while they can.

The Indians believe that China is the next superpower and that the West in general and the United States in particular will be held hostage by the Chinese because of our economic obsessions.

I have always believed that American conservatism is an attempt to find a moral justification for selfishness - I'm afraid it will be our national doom.

19. Just like Germany,
Hitler could have been booted out in the first years of his reign if he hadn't been enabled by the British prime minister, America and the rest of the world in the throes of the depression, and the Germans themselves passively accepting that this was better than what the Weimar Republic had done.

20. Another question keeps haunting me about another 4 years
All our chest thumping (thanks to Dean) Democrats who say they will take it to Bush (hmmm...where the hell are they again?), I'm afraid will go back to their bowing and ring kissing. Can you see these whimps in defeat keep fighting the good fight. NEVER. Sorry, but it's the truth. No one will dare speak of anything liberal from that moment on. They will desert us like rats.

21. Meanwhile in the Hinterland (Cda) - Dalai Lama inspires hope in thousands
Don't lose hope America ...

Dalai Lama inspires hope in thousands

http://www.canada.com/vancouver/vancouversun/news/story.html?id=b0037032-6df8-41bd-b927-4700cc788c38
After seeing the Dalai Lama Sunday morning, a man wearing a Canucks jersey came away convinced that his beloved hockey team would win the seventh game of the playoff series against the Calgary Flames.

Another man, who with his seven-year-old daughter waited in line for three hours to see the Dalai Lama, said he hopes the experience will eventually help her "make her own choice" between Buddhism and the Catholicism of her mother.

More than 26,000 people from every walk of life bought tickets to two sold-out talks at the Pacific Coliseum Sunday, in hopes of receiving widely different blessings from the 14th Dalai Lama, one of the world's most famous religious leaders, who has been called a "god-king."

...more (it really is worth reading)

(a small group of disruptive Christians from Seattle tried to suck the joy out of the air but they were shunned)
