If someone were drafted and called to duty but that person
did not report or show up or refuse to go, what would be the penalty? Does anyone know?

For how long? I think there would be a lot who would prefer jail.

5. Not sure, but when you come out...
...you are stilleligable for service I think. Plus it is a federal crime. Not something to acept on your record easily. Employability adn other concerns need to be considered before you make that decision.

7. Don't you think that employers would understand considering
the type of illegal war we're in? This is not a war involving defending America. Are people going to really put up with another Vietnam and hold it against those who don't wish to fight? The government does not own my son's life. How can a solder fight or be expected to fight when he doesn't believe in the cause?

10. Yes, that is exactly what I believe.
Some will, many won't. How many in each camp? Don't know for sure, but I am guessing the deck will still be stacked agaisnt them. Particularly if they are in a field that uses federal money in any way.

12. Yes, but what are your future employment prospects
if you are stark raving mad or dead?

15. Of course it is - I'd rather have to deal
with a "mark on my record" than the aftereffects of going to fight for oil in some middle eastern hell hole that I might never return from.

17. That is your choice.
But it really has nothing to do with what the consequences are if you choose to dodge the draft. All it has any bearing on is your decision to do so. This would NOT be what we were talking about at this time.

4. Anyone know if they would actively look for someone who didn't show up?
Or would they just put a bench warrant of some kind out on them?

Do they go to their houses and search for them?

8. The penalties now for not signing up for selective service
include being ineligible for any government funded student aid as well as being ineligible for government jobs. I don't know if that would include working for any company that had a government contract.

Of course upper middle class people don't have to worry as much (if at all) about federal financial aid. That worry would fall on the shoulders of the poor and moderate income.

11. Yes, they can force you.
That's why so many kids went to Canada during Vietnam. Conscientious objector status on religious grounds is possible, but very difficult to obtain if your religion isn't anti all wars (such as Quakers). And C.O's still were required to serve, often in combat areas, but in non-combat positions. For instance, as medics.

14. Federal Pen...YES The FBI comes after you and now adays ....
If you fail to report ..your option is consientious objector, which won't go anywhere nowadays., since they think they are fighting God's war. Flee the country or being on the FBI's wanted List.
When they find you in a time of war, they can legally Shoot you.
The last time it happened was with Private Slovick who deserted, they said, but he was lost. If you don't show up..MP's and the FBI show up..everywhere you could think of going. Leaving the country buys immunity. But the Vietnam vets were granted immunity after years, I believe. and were free to come back to the States. Under this administration he won't give you immunity but more than likely charge you or deem you an enemy combatant. Remember the with us or against us speech !
