I wrote another LTTE

To the Editor of the San Antonio Express-News,

I read with surprise Charles D. Wood's letter in your column today. Have I suddenly woken up in an alternate universe in which we are supposed to look down upon & deride the military service of Senator John Kerry, a decorated veteran and call the medals he was awarded "undeserved" simply because he is a Democrat? Certainly the Republicans can't be THAT desperate to get their candidate re-elected! Certainly they, the party that wraps itself up in the flag & prides itself on being "pro-military" would never EVER dare denigrate ANY veteran's service!

Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot. They did it back in 2000. It was done to Senator John McCain, ironically one of the few Republicans I'd consider voting for. He was such a threat to the Bush candidacy that Bush supporters started spreading rumors that he was mentally unstable due to the years he spent as a guest of the Hanoi Hilton. They were even more offensive in calling voters in the South & intimating that Sen. McCain was the father of an illegitimate bi-racial child. I guess the Bush supporters thought that was so effective that they now have decided to try it out on Senator John Kerry.

As if a few pictures of President Bush all gussied up like a GI Joe/Ken doll combination would overshadow the real service, patriotism, & valor that Senator John Kerry provided to this country during the Vietnam Era! Sorry, but this voter for one stopped playing Barbies decades ago, and one only need look at the disaster of Iraq to realize that a GI Joe/Ken doll makes a very poor commander-in-chief.

For the record, Senator Kerry did not award himself those medals. The Navy did. I also know that medals such as the ones received by Senator Kerry are not handed out like prizes in a Cracker Jacks box. Senator Kerry's superior officers wrote glowing recommendations of him. President Bush's couldn't even remember if he showed up for the cush duty his daddy got him! Senator Kerry volunteered to be sent to Vietnam and requested "Swift" boat duty. All President Bush did was check off the box that said "Do Not Volunteer," made sure he was assigned to fly planes that were not going to be used there, and then simply not report for duty.

I know who I'd rather see as commander in chief. Given these two choices, it can only be Senator John Kerry.

Especially like the "gussied up" part. So quaint, how can they not print it?

2. thanks!
yeah, i hope they get a chuckle out of it & run it because of that. if they do run it, i've got a memory full of names of toys to use in LTTE besides GI Joe & Ken. Isn't it sad that GI Joe spent more time in Nam than Bush?
