MI house passed bill allowing drs to refuse treatment to gays
http://www.365gay.com/newscon04/04/042204MichMed.htm

Doctors or other health care providers could not be disciplined or sued if they refuse to treat gay patients under legislation passed Wednesday by the Michigan House.

The bill allows health care workers to refuse service to anyone on moral, ethical or religious grounds.

The Republican dominated House passed the measure as dozens of Catholics looked on from the gallery. The Michigan Catholic Conference, which pushed for the bills, hosted a legislative day for Catholics on Wednesday at the state Capitol.

2. Do those idiotics realize how many Jewish doctors there are?
How about doctors from India and Pakistan and the Far East? Do they think they are all Catholics?

Were any folks in the medical community clamoring for this?

3. The real grounds
...would have to be an unreasonable and ignorant phobia about HIV. That's the only thing I can think of. This goes completely against the Hippocratic Oath. This goes agaisnt any sort of medical ethics, period. This is crazy.

My god! Just like a scene out of Maya Angelou's "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings". Dentist her Mom worked for refused to help her when she had a bad dental problem. Mom was Black and the Dentist was white. I guess he refused on the moral high ground. This crap just makes me sick to my stomach.

This is America. The definitive hypocracy (that's an amalgam of "democracy" and "hypocrisy".)

5. How about a bill
so doctors don't have to treat pedophile priests? What's up with the Catholic church anyhow? Are there NO gay Catholics? Can they refuse to treat Democrats? All things considered, I hope the church goes broke paying off the people that have been molested. They should lose their tax exempt status for all the politicking they have been doing of late. First the flap over Kerry at communion, now this.

10. What's up is that....
they're competing with the protestant fundie scum to see ho bigoted they can be. It's preperation for the battles withthe fascist 'christian' police state that will be installed it * gets four more years. Organized religion is all corrupt and foul. My spiritual life is healthy without the intervening layers of greed and brutality that organized religion imposes on EVERYONE who cedes their own spirituality to others. SO FLAME ME.

6. This is nothing new in MI
Just last year, maybe the year before, there was a local Kalamazoo ordinance (thankfully voted down) that would have made it legal for landlords to refuse to rent to gay and lesbian couples, and which would also IIRC allow them to evict gays and lesbians at any time.

No, it didn't pass.

11. This is clearly an anti-abortion bill. Hopefully it gets vetoed.
Under Engler, this bill would pass. Hopefully, Granholm will veto it.

8. Any respectable doctor would refuse to invoke this law.
I'm not defending the law, but I don't think it will be used often because of little things like the Hippocratic Oath.

But I still hope it doesn't pass. What has the governor said about this?

12. This is beyond wrong.

The fundies will be creaming their pants at this.

This is the America they want.

This has got to stop.

It is immoral to refuse health care to anyone for any reason period.

These sick bastards are busy creating hate.

14. next, a bill allowing restaurant workers to refuse service to anyone?
on moral, ethical or religious grounds?

sounds eerily like a segregationist stance to me and i doubt it will pass constitutional muster.

15. They claim to value life.
They are liars.

They are animals.

They are inhuman.

They are vermin.

They are the politicians who pushed this crap and the doctors who wilfully condemn the ill because of a perception.

I bet y'all $5 that some people affected by this will in turn take it out on society if it's signed and enacted. I don't live in Michigan, nor would I wantonly tell people to do bad things - after all, that's in the best interests of music groups.

Once the spiral downward begins, it's hard to get back to level ground.

What will our last battlefield be?

18. Lately I don't even want to stay in this country...
I am getting tired.
Tired of a president who lies.
Tired of the growing Christian Taliban in the US.
Tired of fighting every day for basic rights that are becoming commonplace in other first-world countries.

I never thought I would want to leave the US, but I do now.

20. what can one say to this?
:wow:

I'd expect to see this originating from Iran under the Ayatollah or Afghanistan under the Taliban. Hideous that it's even been contemplated.

Wonder how it'd work in ED's with people coming in unconscious...

"gee I dunno nurse, looks a bit of a fairy, think I'll let him bleed to death based on my religious convictions"

21. Moral grounds??--so does this mean they can refuse the divorced, the
child of a single Mom, the single Mom, those who have no religion or are of a non-Chrisitian religion?? How about mix marriages? But I'm sure it doesn't include corporate pigs who steal from the company till or big business man who fucks his secretary. My goodness, they will just simply have to have a guidebook to what is morally (can you grease the offering plate with some big bucks) acceptable and what is not.
