how would you like it if your kid got drafted?
i say kid, young man or woman more correctly. my two older kids are too old to be drafted, daughter has 3 kids. but my youngest son is 20, and prime draft material. they even come to my door now to hand deliver enlistment invitations. i don't think i would like it at all if he got drafted into this obscenity called the war in iraq.

and i don't know what i'll do. maybe something drastic. i think there might even be a people's revolt over it. i don't think they have enough prisons to house all the people who would refuse to go.

what do you think?

1. Absolutely no. Our "leaders" are not into defending the country,
which is what an army is for. They are into attacking other countries and having our kids killed for their own selfish interest and stupidity.

3. I was in the Navy for 11 years, and...
I loved it. If I hadn't got married I would have stayed in until they kicked me out.

That said, if my son was of draft age, I would tell him to join the air force or navy. But even if he got drafted by the marines, I would be okay with it. I trust them alot more than Bush.

4. Scares the sh*t out of me
My daughter just turned 13, but the possibility still lurks out there in the future. Very, very scary. I have brothers-in-law who could get drafted, and two nephews-in-law who would be prime draft material. I hate it, I hate it, I hate it. I'd hide my family members, flee to Mexico, do whatever. And I don't think I'm alone.

You're right--there would be a revolt. Count on it.

5. probably not before the election
cause it would be a very unpopular thing to do for bushco. but, if they 'get back' in, in 04, they'll do any damn thing they want

6. If it was a war that was worth fighting
I would feel differently. But not this war. No disrespect to the men and women who are currently, have previously, or will be fighting in Iraq. I do support our troops, but I do not, and will not support the draft for a "war" that has not been declared by Congress by constitutional means. Our Constitution was written to provide checks and balances. One of these was giving Congress the power to declare war. I would go to prison before I allowed my child to be drafted into an unconstitutional war. And that is what this war is. If Bush wants to go off and send our troops around the globe to fight - he needs to seek a formal declaration of war from Congress, not some carte blanche permission slip to do whatever he wants without the proper checks and balances in play.

8. Hell NO! HE WON'T GO!!!!!!
I rejoiced in the knowledge that my stepson, now over draft age, would never be drafted due to certain disabilities. During the years since the draft ended, I guess I believed that the draft was gone for good.

Since the advent of the BFEE, I have been less complacent. My son is now eleven. If the draft is reinstated after the 2004 election, I am seriously considering emigration to a less Romulan/Klingon hybrid nataured nation.

9. I don't have any kids but...
I am a 20 year old female and who knows I might be drafted along with the men if BushCo have their way. Frankly the prospect scares the hell out of me and I am not about to die for this fake-ass war. If it was a legit war, I would gladly serve my country but not for this. I smell a Vietnam style uprising if we have to institute a draft.

11. Would I like it?
I am waaay beyond don't "like" it. My almost 22-year old (boy) is so out of here if they reinstate the draft. He's heading out to Germany in a few weeks to spend a month as part of his certification to teach English As A Second Language. Has a return ticket but I swear if there looks like there will be a draft I'll have him stay. We WILL do something drastic because there is NO WAY he is going over there. My 24 year old (girl) wouldn't go either and luckily has the skills and education to emigrate anywhere and be assured of employment.

I remember Vietnam and watched as friends died over that pointless exercise in American imperialism and will NOT sacrifice my children for this - which is just as bad as Vietnam.

The big thing that Vietnam and the Iraq War have in common is that the people who make the decisions aren't willing to put their loved ones on the front lines. In WWI and II, and even Korea, there WERE politician leaders' kids out there. The people who made war had a very deeply personal stake in it.

Now there's what - like one congressman - who has a kid over there? Until I see the children of the politicians (of both parties) over there - especially those who were so hot to trot for this war, I won't be convinced that it's a war worth fighting. And there isn't a chance in goddam hell that my babies will be out there if their kids aren't there too.

No fucking way.

18. Germany might be a bad place to go because of the draft
Edited on Fri Apr-23-04 03:38 AM by Kellanved
As you might know Germany has a draft. Because of that it has a contract with the US, guaranteeing the swift repatriation of draftable youths in both directions.
It is one of the surprises when gaining German citizenship: the German Army might draft one right away - happened to several famous Soccer players.

I hope your son enjoys his stay :hi: .

12. I have a son 17 and one 22
I'm not sure what I will do for sure....but my sons won't be going. They will definitely leave the country....have some friends who have family in Canada that will help. If that doesn't work we will leave one way or another. My son's will not I repeat will not be going.

I also agree if people get together and no one and I mean no one or pretty much no one will go......it won't work for the administration they can't put everyone into prison, but in the beginning many would go. The problem Mopaul is the people won't get together on it that's my take. a lot of kids will be fleeing but many will just go.

13. My kids are years away from having to worry about that.
But I never want my babies to be dragged off to war. If they were draft age now, I'd be scared to death. I feel for those of you with draft age kids.

14. I have two sons, both pre-teens.
I have skills that I could use in another country. If * is reelected this fall, I will consider moving to another country and raising my children there. It won't be just because of the draft. If * is reelected, I'll be so angry I won't want to live here.

On the other hand, I will also have to consider that it might be better to stay and fight. And my husband is unlikely to want to leave. So it will be a no-win situation.

The sad part is that my younger son has actually considered a military career, but even he, at ten years old, is disillusioned by our lying president and this immoral war.

We shouldn't have invaded Iraq in the first place. If we had to invade Afghanistan (which I doubt) we should have stayed focused there, helping them rebuild, and capturing OBL.

If Gore were president I believe there is a better than even chance that 9/11 would never have occurred. Under Clinton we captured al Quada operatives and prevented several attempted attacks.

The whole situation has gone to hell ever since Chimpy was illegally placed in office in 2000. I am very angry about it.

15. No Child Left Unrecruited: Army Recruiters Target High Schools
<clips>

... But the American military empire stretches far beyond the Middle East. The U.S. maintains a vast network of bases on every continent except Antarctica spanning some 130 countries around the world and the government is continually looking for ways to replenish its overstretched military.

One place it is focusing its attention, is American high schools. Since 2001, the Bush administration has been requiring high schools to disclose student records to military recruiters or risk losing federal aid.

Under a mandate authorized by the Bush administration's No Child Left Behind Act, recruiters are entitled to get the names, addresses and phone numbers of high school juniors and seniors, unless parents or students sign a form requesting that the data be withheld. Districts that don't comply stand to lose millions in federal funding. As one Pentagon spokeswoman told the Los Angeles Times, the policy “Allows the Department of Defense to recruit from a much broader, diverse and more representative group of the youth of America."

Yesterday in Santa Barbara I spoke with Michael Cervantes, an Army veteran with Veterans for Peace who is campaiging against Bush's policy to target high school students for military recruitment. Cervantes fought in the Vietnam war after being drafted out of high school. I asked him what actions he had taken against the policy.

16. More on high school recruiting:
I had a long after-school conversation with a friend and colleague today; we were, not unexpectedly, discussing the implosion we see happening in public ed and our hopes that we can deep-six NCLB next year. My friend asked me how supposed leaders could be so destructive, and was blasting the skyrocketing dropout rates. I told her it was deliberate; that all of those dropouts create a large force of cheap labor and future soldiers.

And she told me that her son, age 16, has been getting the hard sell from recruiters in high school. The army is giving free software games to anyone who will sign a list allowing the army to "contact" them upon graduation. The Navy is promising something else. Recruiters have been calling their home frequently to "chat" with their son. They got all of the contact information for giveaways, phonecalls, etc. from the local high school. And my friends are outraged. They feel violated by the high-pressure tactics.

I can understand that they're outraged. I'm outraged reading about it. If we don't get rid of this madman in November, we're toast.

Thanks for that information LWolf. :hi:

20. You're welcome, and
we WILL evict the madman come November. The administration of King George II will go down in history as the last desperate gasp of an insane cult determined to bring a new "dark age" to the planet. The tide is turning, I can feel it. Sanity will prevail.
