For the Right-wing nuts - America not a Christian nation -
Listening to Randi Redo on AAR. I had not thought about the Treaty of Tripoli since I learned about it in college (I was a Poli Sci major, probably most people have never heard of it). The Treaty of Triploi was signed in 1796 toward the end of Washington's second term as President. The government entered this treaty declaring:
"As the Government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Musselmen; and as the said States never have entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mehomitan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries."

Of course the Treaty holds no legality any more, but it clearly shows that the founders did not set this nation up as a Christian nation.

Most interesting thing to me is that I remember some emails going around last year from some of my charismatic Christian friends. They were texts of supposedly prophecies Washington had received from God. They went into great detail to establish that Washington was a devout conservatice, charismatic Christian. Funny, since Washington never really talked about his religion. He was a freemason, and at his death, his friend is reported as saying, "George Washington was a Deist."

1. i like to say it was founded by people who FLED christian nations
if they wanted to live in a christian nation, all they had to do was stay in europe.

no. from the earliest settlers on, they came to america so they could practice religion in a land where the government STAYED OUT OF RELIGION.

it's amazing that they can think america was founded as a christian nation when the constitution doesn't even mention god in its preamble. the only reference to religion is in the first amendment, in which the right to pass laws restricting freedom of religion is DENIED to congress.

2. fundies tune all the facts out
these people don't read or retain information, they get all their 'facts' from their own kind. given enough power and free reign, they will bring the whole nation down to the taliban level.

I grew up in WW2 so know that is that song means and who still sings it and makes their blood run strong. Come on think. We were not a Christian ruled country and our founders came from the Age of reason and all that.Enlightenment etc.Church and state were not to mix.

6. facts do not matter to these fanatics
Edited on Fri Apr-23-04 08:18 AM by ithacan
They are in their own bubble, in total denial, they are so blinded by their "beliefs", just like Bush and company on Iraq.

They cannot accept the well-established FACT that this country was founded as a secular republic, that the founders could very easily have included religion, god, etc. in the Constitution, BUT THEY DID NOT!!

But all of these facts are dismissed by the "religious right" pushing the christian nation bullshit.

That's why they are dangerous. Facts do not matter to them. And they will do anything to achieve their goals.
