Louisiana May Ban Low-Slung Pants
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&e=8&u=/ap/20040423/ap_on_fe_st/pants_too_low_2

BATON ROUGE, La. - People who wear low-slung pants that expose skin or "intimate clothing" would face a fine of up to $500 and possible jail time under a bill filed by a Jefferson Parish lawmaker.

State Rep. Derrick Shepherd said he filed the bill because he was tired of catching glimpses of boxer shorts and G-strings over the lowered belt lines of young adults.

The bill would punish anyone caught wearing low-riding pants with a fine of as much as $500 or as many as six months in jail, or both.

"I'm sick of seeing it," said Shepherd, a first-term legislator. "The community's outraged. And if parents can't do their job, if parents can't regulate what their children wear, then there should be a law."

FWIW, I think it's rather vulgar myself, but bad taste is in the eye of the beholder.

19. Did you know that veiling women here in the US was dicussed
in puritan new england?

I read a book called American Jezebel about Ann Hutchinson and in it the author mentioned that a John Endicott had brought up the idea of veiling women...so who knows what might have happened ..

GOP - making government smaller. Just small enough to fit inside YOUR bedroom!

Excellent!

Yes, I know, apparently the proponent of the bill is a Dem. This is VERY screwy. He says the community is outraged about this? About THIS? Uh, maybe he's spent too much time crossing over to the Dark Side with junkets to Crawford or something. Or a DINO maybe?

That said, this is STILL a great quote, and STILL applicable all over the map.

5. What a Wonderful Idea!
My, what a great idea!

Ban certain types of clothing because someone is "sick of seeing it" and because "the community's outraged".

But why stop with low-riding pants?

I am "sick of seeing" fat people in pants that are waaay to tight.

I know of several communities near where I live where wearing white before Memorial Day or after Labor Day is considered an outrage.

Or how about failing to wear the latest completely coordinated outfit from A&F? That ought to be criminal.

And don't even get me started on hairy overweight men who insist on wearing speedos on the beach.

36. there is.. it just went down this week
regarding bringing suits against lawyers who file frivolous lawsuits that clog the court systems and really address nothing (I think that's the jist of it--anyone with the links, hook me up!)

I saw something about it on Abrams' Report on Tuesday or Wednesday on MSNBC.

This is as frivolous as it gets. It's a waste of taxpayer's money when the $$ should be spent on more pressing issues in LA.

31. What is sooo bizare about this:
Jefferson Parish is fucking adjacent to Orleans Parish.....i.e. New Orleans and the "Freedom" Quarter. During Mardi Gras and lots of other times as well, people walk around partying in various states of un-dress, sometimes completely so. The cops 99.999999% of the time are completely cool and leave everyone alone unless there is a fight.

This fricking dingbat is worried about getting a woody from checking out teenie bopper's midriffs, so he's gonna pass a law??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

If anyone...........anyone at all thinks this has even a snowball's chance in hell of anything happening to this bill but it being laughed out of the house, I have a bridge to sell them.

33. Jeff Parish: also home to one David Duke
him you KKKnow.

Then there was the J.P. sheriff who actually erected a barrier, with no authority whatsoever, across a road that led from wealthy, white Old Metairie (in J.P.) to poor, African American Hollygrove (in N'awlins proper). Then-N.O. mayor Sidney Barthelemy, who is African American, garnered headlines by attacking the barrier with a sledgehammer, a la the Berlin Wall.

If there exists a starker contrast between any U.S. city and its adjacent suburbs, I don't know where it could be.

Edited on Sat Apr-24-04 11:47 AM by Hell Hath No Fury
I saw him on CNN yesterday and he was saying it was time to do away with the "if it feels good do it" mentality and bring back "morals".

There have been several threads recently on "moderates" in the party and why there seems to be such hostility towards them from many here.

Ya wanna know why?

Exhibit A: State Rep. Derrick Shepherd from Louisiana.

Democrats who legislate "morality"??? Democrats who legislate dress code as a form of free speech?

FUCK THAT.

Sorry, that is what RW Republicans do.

I'll give you the CBDTPA... I'm pissed about that too. The "corporate ass licking" is a question of interpretation.

The reason that it's valid to attack Bush for the stupidity of random Republicans across the country is because he generally endorses their stupid actions. I can't see Kerry endorsing this move.

So now we've reached the point that seeing the waistband of underwear is obscene?

What's next? A law against a woman showing her arms or legs? A law against a man taking his shirt off? Full-length, head-to-toe bathing suits? :eyes:

Why stop at clothing? Let's pass some laws regulating what parents can feed their children or what they can allow their children to read!

I've had just about enough of the "nanny" government!
