Bush to give Iraq "Limited Sovereignty! : - another oxymoron
NY Times reports that the 'sovereignty' to be given to Iraq at the end of June would limit their authority over armed forces, and give then NO AUTHORITY TO MAKE NEW LAWS!!!!!

Why is there no outcry at the farce being played out here? The dictionary defines 'sovereignty' very clearly:

SOVEREIGNTY
Black's Law Dictionary
(Sixth Edition)

"The supreme, absolute, and uncontrollable power by which any independent state is governed; supreme political authority; the supreme will; paramount control of the constitution and frame of government and its administration; the self-sufficient source of political power, from which all specific political powers are derived; the international independence of a state, combined with the right and power of regulating its internal affairs without foreign dictation; also a political society, or state, which is sovereign and independent.

The power to do everything in a state without accountability, --to make laws, to execute and to apply them, to impose and collect taxes and levy contributions, to make war or peace, to form treaties of alliance or of commerce with foreign nations, and the like."

I'm appalled at the silence.

Replay that explains, but does not excuse the madness:

3. seems to me
it's not the best way to start a discussion - telling everyone that you are appalled by them.

If you want to start a discussion, I'm sure you would find that many of us are applalled. There is no end to my appalledness(!?).

What would you like to do about it?

There are protests on May Day. See the Activism forum.

4. I'm not sure appalled necessarily at us,
But at the U.S. population in general, how they are blindly accepting 'turnover' to an as-yet-undefined entity. Two months and counting... not long to set up a gov't.

And I agree, turning over sovereignty means just that- giving control back to them, not some limited power.

12. No wonder he can say we'll meet the June 30 deadline
because we WON'T BE DOING ANYTHING AT ALL to hand over any actual power that matters!

It'll be a HINO - a Handover In Name Only. x(

We deserve a full scale revolt for that.

25. Very clever but could it be they are once again flirting with error
Their Right Wrong Ration to date shows an appalling Error Rate. Bush and Company have not shown a winning pattern for his 3 year term yet. A Couple hits but mostly losing innings and we trailing at the moment....3 to 14

14. Legal contracts is it, particularly SOFA's
Bush* wants a sovereign govt for two reasons only, so the only authority he is going to give it will be the authority to:

1) Sign contracts with Halliburton

2) Sign a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) which will enable the US to establish a permanent military presence in Iraq

19. That's a nice summary on this topic
from the past couple of days, but I'm wondering how we can get Kerry to talk about

- the permanent bases
- the non-soverenity to be handed over on June 30.

Other than bombarding his campaign office with email ...

"Iraq--the 51st state!"

Just because people are silent doesn't mean they don't know what's going on. I believe the silent majority will show up in November and vote for Kerry. We can get angry about any issue that involves Bush, take your pick. I am tired of getting angry, so I watch what he does and wait for it to backfire in his face. There's so many lies out there - he will get caught up in one eventually, and not get out of it.

Have a little faith.

27. Why didn't the British think of that?

if the Brits had only thrown the American colonies a few scraps of 'limited sovereignty,' they would have avoided a revolutionary war altogether. And their colonial subjects in the New World would have been foever grateful to them!
